Should is the operative word. Some gunsmiths are great, others not so much. I also would not pay a gunsmith for this.

In the end, if going the gunsmith route will help you sleep at night and have confidence in your weapon then that's your decision.

Spend the money on good mags. Lube rifle, load mags, shoot. Repeat until warm fuzzies erase nagging doubt...

I get where you all are coming from, it just bothers me that it will only work with a PMAG. I accept that they are the best, but are Tapco really so bad that a brand new one will jam my gun?

Yes. They are that bad. You have two substandard magazines and one good magazine. You bought a high quality AR and you now need to spend the money on some decent mags and ammo.

It dont think its fair to say that your DD rifle is picky on the mags it needs, I would bet that if those mags create problems in your rifle they will do it in just about any rifle, If you like GI style mags, BCM sells some bad ass GI mags with Magpul followers installed. They a fairly cheap on the prices as well. Only problem is they are hard to get right now in the craze.

What kind of FTFs are you getting? Are they anything like this?

I had a problem shooting the first 200 rounds through my DDM4 V1 that I recently picked up a couple of weeks ago. The bolt didn't fully chamber the round and it looked like it just ran out of steam. I was shooting Independence 5.56 and American Eagle .223 and both seemed to run into this issue with my new PMAG. I didn't have any issues with my older PMAG though.

At first I thought it was a gas leak or something to do with my new PMAG but it just didn't make sense. I checked the mating between the gas tube and bolt, and also for any loose gas keys, and everything seemed fine. I also checked the chamber and feed ramps to make sure there weren't any burrs catching the bolt. I contact DD and they told me to ship the rifle back since this shouldn't be happening. I did some research and decided to buy a different kind of lube (orig. used Hoppe's Elite, but bought some Slip 2000 EWL instead), one that really stayed on the bolt and didn't dry up. Lubed everything up and shot another 200 rounds this past weekend with no issues with the newer PMAG and same ammo. I suggest you do the same before shipping anything to DD. I'm going to try and run another 200 this weekend without lubing my rifle to see if the issue is completely gone. Hope this helps or gives you some piece of mind.

It's not that the gun only works with Pmags... That Pmag is the only mag you have that works.

Throw the other shit in the trash and forget about 'em.

I only run NHMTG, Okay or Colt mags with Magpul followers or I use Pmags.

Yeah dude, welcome to the world of AR-15's. There is a LOT of shitty mags out there. It has zero to do with your gun. use the mags to induce failures while training, (IE mark them) and buy pmags/nhmtg/lancers. 3 mags for an ar is not enough anyway. check on the Official Where can i get it thread. Good mags have been popping up atleast once a week. if your quick you can get some. (i did)

Do you know anyone locally with an AR? Why dont you let them shoot some rounds through your mags in their AR. I bet they will have the same results. It'd make you feel better. Feeding issues are usually caused by the mag anyway so i'm not sure why youd blame it on the poor little daniel defense.

    Thanks for all the responses:

greeneggsandham - It doesn't look like that. When the failures happen, the bolt is most of the way back and the bullet is kinda jammed right above where it would be in the magazine. It seems to be jammed right up against the silver angled ring which i'm assuming guides it into the chamber. I wish I would have taken a picture, but that's the best description I can give without one.

Also, I plan to try both the aluminum and the tapco magazine on a Core 15 to see if they work with that system or not. That will give me some peace of mind... if they don't that is...

UPDATE: So I finally had some time to go to the range today with both my DD and my Core 15. I used the same 3 magazines as earlier mentioned, the results are as follows:

    DD: Pmag- Fired all rounds
Tapco - Jammed on first round
Aluminum - Jammed on first round

I took the two mags that jammed in the DD and put them straight in the Core 15:

Core 15: Aluminum - 20 rounds just fine
Tapco - 20 rounds, last one double feed

Ive included picture of what the DD looked like with both the jammed magazines:

This didn't really do much to convince me that everything is A ok with my DD...Sure it fired alright with the included PMAG, but I highly doubt that they make a weapon that can only fire with one type of magazine.
