    I don't give a rat's ass about your guns.

I offer my sincere condolences over the loss of your pets.

I restarted the thread because the goal was to help the OP recover some of what he lost and because most here would find it interesting to see the recovery process. You don't like it, talk to me about it privately bigshot.

By the way, I have 3 dogs of my own. No one here has trivialized anything.

Thank you Sir! As far as you not giving a "rats a$$" about my guns, I didn't ask you too. I started this thread to be constructive and hope my experience could help keep it from happening to anybody else.

I have never built a AR-15 before and I don't have the tools to try it. I rather leave it to people that know more about it then I do. Money is tight at the present time so I have to take that into consideration. I do have an idea. If everything checks out and its safe to rebuild then if multiple people want to chip in to return it to working condition. I say it's just not my AR-15 anymore and in that regard I will need help running the hell out of it. After rebuilding it, it will need to be tested thoroughly to make sure she is holding together.

Anybody that would like to help I would like to talk to them in real time on the phone, skype or facebook. So if you would like to lend a hand PM me and we can exchange info so we can talk in real time. If everything checks out and it's safe I say we nickname this project the Phoenix. Rise of the Phoenix!

I'm sorry, especially for the animals.. For the future, get a good safe and a collectables insurance policy.. Forget about homeowners and all the other lame deals. A collectable policy will allow you insure your stuff at the value you decide, no list's, pictures, etc.. until after a loss.. Aldo get a good computer program to track everything. Something like shotworks pro. JMO.. Ron

First of all I want to say I'm sorry for the OP's loss. It friggin sucks to come home to something like that.

Now for everyone who owns a safe, what steps should one take to ensure it is as fireproof as possible?

Don't they sell fireproof/fire resistant insulation at Home Depot? Is that the type of stuff you can use on a gun safe too?

    Checkout it's fire resistance rating.
Drywall is fire resistant and what most safes are lined with.
You can always pull off the carpeting inside your safe and add a layer or 2 for very little money. The carpeting can then be reinstalled.

I have 2 small rooms in my house that are built under exterior balconies and are all concrete.
One of these rooms is my reloading room.
Eventually the other will be stripped down to bare concrete and studded with steel studs and drywall to make up my gun room.

I made the same offer, as I see this as an excellent opportunity for learning; me, you, him, whoever. I think documenting the process here in a sticky could prove invaluable to the masses. Hell, the work could even be parted out to different people. My point in the offers was that I do not believe these guns to be total losses, and although the loss of the pets and the other items is an obvious tragedy, I think something good should come out of this for the OP.

As to the rifle, I know I have a few excess parts laying around, I am sure some others here do too. The LPK, buffer and spring need to go for sure, as does any other steel hardware. The rest becomes a wait and see because a full inspection would tell.

Upper receiver, I would be inclined to replace it
    Lower, refinish/Duracoat
    and rebuilt
    Barrel, refinish/Duracoat
    after removing the muzzle device
    Crush washer, replace
    Muzzle device, refinish/Duracoat
, a little burn off and corrosion just gives them character
Gas tube and pin, remove and inspect, replace pin
BUIS, I am inclined to replace as tearing these down and painting them with all of their small parts is just too much labor
Receiver extension, Replace (too much paint on these makes sliding a stock difficult If you have a stock you think rides too loose, a couple coats of Duracoat is a cure)
    Receiver end plate, refinish/Duracoat
    or replace
Stock, replace (I list stock and receiver extension separately, as I don't know if the OP would go back to the original Magpul Stock.
    Pistol grip and hardware, replace
    Trigger guard replace,
    Optic, replace
    Light and mount, replace
    FF Handguards, re-finish/Duracoat

If anyone wants to double check my list and offer alternatives, and or the costs of the replacement parts, please do, a collective effort won't hurt.

As for the pistol, I think the OP should contact "Mr. Smith" from Superior Firearms, as the work he has posted here is nothing short of art.

Feel free to add, bash, or offer alternatives above.

    K
Sounds like a good list. I would probably add one thing. All springs replaced. RE, detent, takedown, pivot, extractor (and obviously the rubber insert/s), mag release, bolt catch spring, etc.

    Steel,

Have you heard back from BCM or Trijicon?

    Check your PMs shortly.
