Filing it down won't hurt how it shoots.

Contacting Aero first leaves your options open. Filing it down means you're committed

Well I sent them a message via their website and hopefully I hear back from them tomorrow. If all else fails, Ill just file it down. I should be getting my other upper within the next 2 weeks anyhow.

I could be mistaken, but I thought someone was selling out of spec uppers cheap a few months ago. Does anyone else remember this? If I'm not hallucinating you may have one of these. Did you buy it from a company or individual?

Looking at his measurements I think the lower is the problem with these two specific parts. It measures .495 at the opening which is smaller than the other lowers measured in this thread but his upper rear lug is in line with the other ones measured in the thread. Looks like it would work with a colt or bcm upper though.

I say sand it if you plan on keeping this upper long term. If you like to change it up a lot or aren't sure, then sell the Aero and try to buy a different upper that would have a slightly tighter lug. Once sanded, the value of the aero will go down. Just my opinion mind you.

OK Grant, be expecting an e-mail from me soon...

To the OP: Instead of filing, may I recommend a small sanding block instead? I believe it would be easier to get even pressure while removing material given the geometry of the upper. Plus, you can control/change your grits as needed. The major downside I see to reducing the size of your lug is that you'll be removing a good deal if not all of the anodizing - HA much is harder than the Al underneath (think case-hardening). I'm afraid that if you remove the ano, that the anodized surfaces of your lower will wear on your upper over a relatively short amount of time, causing outrageuous amounts of slop between your upper and lower.

I'm thinking maybe Aero got sloppy and left a batch of uppers in the bath too long...

    TXBonds:
The way you have your RE in your first pictures is how I run mine(well another 1/8 turn or whatever to get everything lined up).

If you ran it all lined up in your second set of pictures how would your detent not be pushed down all the way and basically not work?

The little tab that sticks out of the receiver extension is what is supposed to but up against the buffer detent to stop the receiver extension from being screwed in to far.

Thanks for responding. Good point, but I'm not sure. On the rainier one it works turned all the way forward. The edge of the tube doesn't push it down any further from what I can see, it just covers more of the buffer detent than just the tip of the tab does when backed out like the first picture.

    Reply from Aero

The standard lug width interface after plating is as follows:

    Upper Receiver - .498 +-.001
    Lower Receiver - .4995 +-.001

Our uppers will not fit on your lowers if the lower inside lug dimension is .495.

We can replace or refund your purchase on the upper receiver. Whichever you prefer.

    Thank you,

Should I just have them replace it?

Not sure that would accomplish anything since you measured yours at the same size as mine and the same size they indicate they are supposed to be.

From the looks of it, your lower is tighter than mil spec like the colt and BCM models so you will probably need an upper with a smaller lug like the colt or BCM models or just grind/sand yours down and call it good.

AO Precision and Aero Precision are two different companies.
Lets throw them under the bus for the right reasons.

    I've never dealt with AO.

The Aero Precision lowers I've dealt with were just about perfect.

There seems to have been a change in ownership/culture up there at Aero as they were amongst the first adopters of cannibal pricing during this panic.
They have ignored their dealer's back orders while price gouging product via direct sales.

I will never buy a new Aero receiver because of the above.
Many others will have long memories as well.
