    Stock Choices

I bought a Remington 700 SPS last year, with the hopes of attending a Long Range Rifle class. I've been having issues with the Hogue Overmold Stock, that comes with it, and have decided to upgrade. I've come to the conclusion that I will not be able to take the class without an upgrade, to a stock with an adjustable length of pull, and an adjustable cheek piece. (especially the cheek piece)

I'm looking at Stocky's Stocks, and they have a McMillan A5, in stock, for $860, which I believe will fit, if the 20" Remington barrel, is the same as, what they list as an "M24 MilSpec" barrel. (Going to their tech support page, they don't list any 20" barrels for the model 700) I'll have to verify.

However, for $887, Midway offers an AICS stock, that would add a 5 round detachable magazine. It currently has the hinged floor plate. If I wanted to add a detachable magazine to the McMillan, it would add another $200.

    Any thoughts?

The friend that recommended the Bell and Carlson, suggested McRee, as well. I could probably get a McRee, fairly quickly. Does the McRee also convert the rifle from hinged floor plate, to a magazine?

Yes there stocks already have a mag well, but they do not come with a magazine(sold separately). Very easy install, comes with all wrenches.

According to stocky's the M24 has a larger barrel channel, your sps should be a varmint/sendaro contour

Looks like they have one sendaro model in stock but not with the detachable bottom metal

Yes. Put that $1000+ in ammo and practice.

Don't overlook Manners. They are my favorite stock maker.

A T4A is one nice piece of hardware. Don't forget to get it bedded and use your choice of bottom metal. If you are not sure which one you want to keep, then get the mini-chassis so you can sell it later. Then when you find the style you want, ditch the mini chassis and get it bedded. (or just skim bed the chassis)

Easy Day Lone Ranger your on the right path....

Manners, B&C, HS precision, McMillan, AICS, McRee are all GTG... McRee is more of a Techno Stock imo vs. traditional in the sense of it's form factor. I also have witnessed & experienced some McRee stocks having issues in colder temps if that is a concern or possibility for your AO.

The advice by Gatekeeper above is spot on regarding Varmint / Sendaro barrel contour vs. M24 which is a heavier contour. If you find a stock you like you can use a wooden dowel w/ sandpaper/wet dry paper to open up the stock's barrel channel & accommodate a bigger barrel's contour for proper float / clearance. Then skim bed, paint, cerkote etc. Just be advised you cannot go back once you have removed the material. You may want to consider flush cups vs. studs as well.

They basically all have an Aluminum Monobloc / Accubloc design that should be skim bedded. Not absolutely necessary but desirable. Sometimes people get lucky & get a good mount w/ receiver to Bloc w/ your rifle's Lug locking up. Laser bore sight etc.

I've built a few & tend to like McMillan & Manners stocks. Your tastes may be different.

Try "BUGHOLES" (Southern Precision Rifles) @ link provided below as well they usually have a pretty good selection of stocks & actions etc. Greg is easy to deal with there.

Consider this as well as you learn about this platform.
Even a ROBAR 60 does not come w/ all the best upgrades / remedies / deficiencies
imo, the vulnerable / weak spots on your typical R700 S/A L/A are:

    1) the factory R700 Bolt handle is Cast steel & silver soldered/brazed on & been know to break/snap off either in cold temps or vigorous application. (I'd replace it w/ a tool steel 11 degree factory R700 from PTG or similar & have it TIG welded & or Torx screw but not absolutely necessary)

    2) the bottom metal on BDL sucks donkey balls. Get a replacement Bottom metal (Oberdorf is good) or DBM. PTG, DD Ross, Wyatt's, Williams, Badger, Seekins, Surgeon, CDI or what ever is the flavor of the month is better than the pot metal factory. If your go prone in a 2 way gun fight pronto & smack that trigger guard down & break your trigger rendering your rifle non op you might end up losing that one.

Here's a rather extreme example of the type of abuse some of these can take. I never put my Rifles through this much abuse but, have done most of it deployed & I'm always amazed at the durability.

HTH & good luck on your quest.

    That was the plan!

However, fighting for eye relief, by holding my head, up away from the stock, only gave me frustration, a pulled neck muscle, and an eye strain headache.

With the price of ammo, and the cost of the course, I need a proper stock, or I'm just throwing money away.
