Flat Bench & Incline Bench.
Not for competition just for general strength ?
Depends on the 60 year old...
Don't be worried what is good, but instead focus on what is good for you considering your overal health, weight, strength etc.
How much you improve is more important than an arbitrary number.
Overall, I would say if you can bench your body weight you are stronger than most. Most people can't come close, a few can do greater.
Depends on what kind of shape you are in to start.
I would start out working on push-ups for a few weeks before hitting the flat bench.
I would give Will a shout.
My brother saw Deliverance and bought a Bow. I saw Deliverance and bought an AR-15.
1.25 times body weight
I don't really think older folks need to be worried about how much but instead how many.
High reps, low weight.
Older folks
I just wanted a base line number for a friend of mine who is 60.
I have not a clue in what the average 60 year old should start out with to workout.
I will be 60 in a few days and not sure what to start him out with he does a bowflex but no free weights..

Are you lifting at a gym with a spotter? I don't get to the gym anymore, and although I'm not 60 I'm past my football playing days by a bit, so I just have a bench, adjustable dumbbells (10-50lbs), and an ab wheel. I work on precise slow movements with a lot of reps...do as many as I can, take it down 5lbs, as many as I can, down another 5lbs, etc. then do 3 sets of each exercise like that. Heavy weight is more for mass building than toning, so I avoid that...at 6'2" 225lbs I don't need anymore mass.
