    Chin straps and beards

My concern is regarding comfort when wearing an ACH for extended periods of time. Could the Ops-Core CBRN extender be re-purposed as a beard accommodation device? Will this fill the role of keeping the helmet in place?

Is it correct to assume that this will only help with comfort during the day time or when a load is not attached (e.g. NVD, recording devices)?

Important! -- This is not to be confused with the feminine, chin-strap beard:

I am talking about helmet retention whilst rocking the combat beard:

His threat profile doesn't dictate a need for CBRN equipment, just ballistic protection.

We run OpsCore helmets and I just run the strap under my chin, not utilizing the "chin cup".

I you can buy a fleece cover from OpsCore to slide over it, but my beard adds plenty of padding I don't even notice the stitching.

Even wearing PVS-15's, balanced by an EOD LBM helmet weight, I can comfortably wear it without using the chin cup.

Edit: plus it's way easier to talk and eat Cliff Bars this way!

Yeah the talking thing is what really gets me. When using the chin cup in the prescribed manner (on the chin), I have to tighten down my adjustment straps to the point of my jaw being near immobile (for the straps to compress the padding that is my beard and stabilize the helmet). Which then causes all the discomfort associated with wearing the helmet.

I'm going to try the strap under chin without extender configuration tonight.

Question, do you feel that the weighted counterbalance is crucial in this setup? Otherwise, would the cantilever created by the NVDs cause the strap to press against airway and larynx?
