I honestly don't know if that's a bad idea, but it sounds like disassembling it real quick would be a lot faster and easier.

I had the same symptom on my very first AR (RRA). I didn't know about internet forums at the time so I handed it over to Scottsdale Gun Club to fix. When I got it back, I asked what the fix was and was told the gas rings were not staggered. Hmm. I'm still not sure what it was but it ran after that.

I was under the impression that the need for staggered gas rings was at best an urban legend.

Waste of expensive lube and by disassembling it he might notice gunk that is holding up the firing pin. Bolt disassembly is AR15 101, everyone should be able to do it.

If the firing pin tip was damaged, it would not have fired the subsequent rounds.

If you want to do it quickly, you can lay the rifle on it's left side with bolt closed and chamber empty. Then take an oil bottle and put several drops in each of the debris holes in the bolt carrier, which are located ahead of the forward assist serrations.

I would disassemble the BCG and lubricate the parts before I dunked the whole BCG in a tub of CLP. It would give you the opportunity to inspect the parts while you had it apart.

I'm assuming that's why he said the "hmm still not sure what it was" part.

The pin is fine. I'm going to blast the bolt and everything with break cleaner to prep it for frog lube. We'll see if there's any gunk at that time.

I don't see how it could be the gas rings. I don't make them perfectly staggered but enough to where they're not lined up in the same position.

The gas ring myth is just that. Let's not perpetuate the nonsense more.

When did this interaction happen? Do you remember the name of the individual who told you this?

For the record, I have worked with SGC for five years now and I have never heard one of our employees say such a thing. If this happened years ago, then the individual you dealt with has probably left our employ, but if it has been within the last three years, I'd love to know who it was so we can fix it.

Please PM me if you remember a name, that way we won't derail this thread and we can respect the PERSEC of said individual.

Thank you for bringing this up, and we hope to see you on the range.

    Cheers,
    Dan
