S&W Changed Barrel for M&P15 Sport

I've been hearing that S&W changed the the barrel on the 15 Sport. Supposedly, they have gone from the melonite treated 1 in 8 twist 5R barrel to a melonite treated 1 in 9 twist with standard rifling.

The old barrel is still supposed to be available on some of their higher end AR's.

If true, I figure it's a cost saving method. It may also have to do with how many of the old style barrels they can get. It really makes sense for the market S&W is shooting for with that gun.

For now, I'm glad mine is the old style. But, the new one could prove to be super accurate like the old style has.

When I was buying mine, I debated between it and a PSA. I chose the Sport because of the barrel. I hope that the new barrel ends up being as good as the old one.

That blows. The 1:9 is just too slow anymore.

A different forum. I know that's not always a reliable source. But, at least one of the people posting is a knowledgeable person with contacts at S&W.

Also, on the S&W website it defines the barrel twist and rifling type on other guns (like the 15T) but not on the sport. Why would they get rid of the detailed description of one of their most desirable features unless it is changing? It also lists the sport as "new" when you first go the modern sporting rifle page.

Really? Are people running lots of match grade through these guns?

if in fact this is true then that would possibly make those of us who have the sport 1/8 5R barrels kinda lucky...
