    I believe he was regular army. He spoke of getting the ceramic plates later on but taking hits on a steel plate in what I assumed to be a pre Interceptor issue vest. Your question prompted me to research a bit and I couldn't find any description of steel plates ever being an Army issued item. It could be it was privately purchased since there was alot of that going around in the early days with some troops having to deploy with the PASGT vests. Either that or he is just pulling my leg. I will bring it up again next time I see him.
