and, even tho nothing's b&w, just take a look at iron sight tube rifles. i'm going to defer to their experience on the several reasons they consistently hang the front sight way out on the barrel.

not at all true - on so many levels i won't bother to expound.
the point is to get him past over-analyzing a gb mounted front sight (which he's already stated is only for SHTF if his eotech goes down).
and for damn sure to counteract the poor advice to sell the upper...

why not a flip? then you have options - and those are always good.
further, there are far more models of flip than fixed. easier to procure, more variety to meet his desired features.

he has design-consistent mounting areas already - no need to add significant cost, time and complexity when all he's looking for is a front sight.

a spec receiver rail is always same height, so buy the rear sight that matches your desires (and that you think is cool )

the gb rail is typically (but not always) at a lower, but specific, height than the upper rail. armalite will be able to tell you if you can't figger it yourself.
if you have the more common lower-height gb rail, ensure you spec a "gb height" front sight when ordering.

but he already has an installed gas block. we shouldn't advise him to send his upper to a gunsmith at considerable expense when he can simply bolt a sight on the existing gb and be in business.

Re: Gas block mounted front sight?

S&W gas block mounted MI brand flip sight. 5 yrs old 2500 rounds and keeps 2 inch groups at 100 yard (45 year old eyes and medium skill). Cost was low, time involved was low. It hit the sweet spot for me for cost and effectiveness.

gas block height vs. main rail height.

Most railed gas blocks have their picatinny rail at a lower plane than your upper receiver. Not every manufacturer makes a front sight that will accommodate this. Troy does, but it IS a different model than their normal front sight and is noticeably taller.
Necessary taller because it has to make up for the lower height of the gasblock.

Does anyone know the .xxx differential between the main rail height and the (lower) gasblock height? Or does anyone know the gasblock height in relation to the receiver height?

Main rail height is .530 from the top of the receiver.

Why not replace it with the integrated flip sight/bolt on gas block such as offered by vltor, pri, etc? Armalite sells a bolt on fixed fsb as well. just another option to look into.

    Sight radius.

The floated handguard allows the barrel to move (whip) when you fire, but unless your junk is broke, it goes back to the same place.
