    Re: Dummy Shells

This thread took a crazy turn quickly. To the op...good job on making your own stuff. How many did you make? Is the idea for speed load/down load drills?

FWIW, if you take proper precausion you will be good to go practicing drills in your house. If you are a person who lacks confidence in your abilities or skill...then dont. Its a decision you have to make.

I sort of see what you are saying, but safe handling is safe anywhere. Careless handling at the range is more dangerous than safe handling at home, right?

I dry fire practice like its going out of style. I use snap caps but all the same rules still apply. Be aware of where you muzzle lies and what's beyond it, etc. I don't think its dangerous if you follow some basic rules like practicing in a room with no ammo and having the muzzle pointed away from others. And to be honest, someone who practices safe handling procedures and trains will be much better off than someone who doesn't train. Dry fire and other practices allows training when you can't go to the range. Gotta keep those skills sharp!

Well I completely disagree with you and your mentality smacks of the liberal " I know better than you mentality" and therefore you're wrong which is exactly how the Liberals treat us when it comes to firearms. I'm pretty sure that most firearms owners can distinguish between live rounds and dummy rounds and as long as it's a safe location and the weapon has been checked I don't see the issue. If you're implying they can't then maybe we should just take all their guns away if they're not that smart.

You support my position. "I'm pretty sure that most firearms owners can distinguish between live rounds and dummy rounds" It seems you are sure that all firearms owners cannot distinguish live from dummy rounds. "If your implying they can't then maybe we should just take all their guns away if they're not that smart" Again you are correct. I know more than one gun owner that isn't responsible enough to own firearms. Do you think a couple with a 10 year old son is smart keeping a rifle, shotgun and pistol in an unlocked closet with ammo on the shelf above them?? Did your father ever tell you not to point a gun at anything you didn't want to shoot. Do you recommend practicing reloads with the gun pointed at the floor or the wall between you and the kids bedroom? You can call me what you want but I still have an opinion. GH

Only made 4. And Yes sir I made them for speed load drills. I have historically sucked at that, and it is amazing what a little practice does....

    Weight question.

Do you notice any appreciable weight difference?

    Ummmm....

I grew up in a house that had rifles, shotguns and handguns stored in closets and under beds, in closets and in kitchen drawers and gun cabinets.

I knew where all the guns were and how to load them and make them safe and where the ammo was.

I "worked" in a gun store during the summers growing up cleaning guns and helping to mount optics when I was 10 and there was a loaded S&W 66 laying on the desk. There were guns in racks all over the store, unlocked with ammo right underneath them.

I dry fire with snap caps while aiming at "bad guys" on the TV with my handguns. (I don't care if I accidentally shoot the TV)

I also shoot at varmints (muskrats, coyotes, pesky squirrels) off my back porch even though there are houses within 200 yards and one neighbor is 30 yards east of my house.

Did you grow up a "city kid" or something?

So how do you live with/manipulate/practice/use your guns?

no there is not a significant weight difference.

Next time I probably wont use all the BB's as the dummys are a few grams heavier.

I did sorta the same but a few tweaks

I popped the primer out (board with a hole in it and a long nail). Think shell holder. Glued in a pencil eraser to absorb the firing pin shock. Cut to fit

Then I did a volume measure of the powder ans substituted. I used cornmeal.

    Wad and pellets.
Folded crimp and secured with glue

1st ones I tried to crimp by refolding and it sucked. Found a handheld crimp starter made by lee on ebay. Was pretty cheap

Weight and balance is identical to live shell.

    Idea

I love the idea but dont like that it uses something that looks like and could be confused with live ammo. I purchased http://www.letargets.com/estylez_item.aspx?item=ST-12 or something very similar but they are very much not weighted correctly. I need to buy some buckshot and epoxy it in place.

I've also seen and used some fiochi dummy rounds that are very nice and clearly say dummy on them. (they are also clear, which is a color i dont use in shells.)
