There are some good instructors in that $150 a day range. For instance, the guys I have met in the VSM program are all excellent and have a wide range of backgrounds. With that said, none of them are Larry Vickers. So in essence, you DO get what you pay for.

From my experience, new shooters (with NO training) might be better suited with an instructor that is offering small classes (as they will need more instruction). As they progress in their knowledge (meaning fundamentally sound), then seek out advanced classes from respected instructors.

Like Ironman8 stated, I mostly seek out specialized training these days (Defensive & Offensive room clearing, Tactics, Low Light, etc). For these classes, you are going to pay more, but IMHO, you get more.

What I wont do is pay premium dough($500+) for a class to get there and there be 20+ students all jammed up on some small range, I don't care who the instructor is.

In my area (Ohio), there are very few instructors out there and the few that are shouldn't be. They seem to think that owning a gun range gives them the ability to teach warfighting. I have people ask me all the time to train them and I've considered it more than once...There is just nothing for men that want to train but can't afford to travel or get the time off work.

I agree that cost of the class is a factor just like any other cost of training.

... and there never will be. bottom line on training is that those who want to become dangerous and skilled make it a priority and MAKE it happen. everyone else ... has other priorities.

when I did the bulk of my training I was hitting 5-7 formal classes a year. it was my priority and all resources were focussed on that. I built a solid foundation, now I can grow both on my own and with less frequent formal and more specialized training.

Recently took a 5 hour class for $60. I would pay another $60 right now to have those hours back. Practice does not make perfect....rather perfect practice makes perfect. Pay for quality or don't pay is my general rule. Broke it last month. Wishing I hadn't.

Price and location are the biggest factors I think most people really look at. Once I get past that hurdle I look for reviews and ask my LE/MIL contacts what they think.

does the cost of a course influence your decision in taking it?

Location first... if I have to drive more than 3 hours to get to the course I don't want to pay more than $400 for a 2 day course. I hate driving.

Size of class and location are main drivers for me.
