Sorry to divert the question of this thread, but: do they replace uppers, or swap out really used ones and use the same lower? The lower looks very well broken in or its just painted..

Probably was a stupid question, but just wondering how the USMC keeps their M16's running if they are old.

I have made the observation studying several USMC photo threads from Afghan and Irag - yes, they do look worn. KAS rails loosing their finish, down to bare aluminum. As to recycling their lowers, I have no firsthand knowledge, except the old story that the Corps never wastes anything.

Anyway, it is a good diversion and I hope a lively thread on the subject of CURRENT USMC specific M16A3/4 accessories are put forth.

All of our lowers are stamped M16A4 so I can't really say for sure, but I can say that 95% of our rifles look mismatched. I've even seen a couple lowers that have no bluing left at all. Unless its completely broken they won't replace it, and even then it takes a while.

As far as how we keep them running, lots of CLP

Well, I prefer function over finish. (Though I did, and am going to my paint my new AR, "FDE" cause I think its better than black.)

It is good to see how long a lower can last though.

People doing dumb shit to their guns is 50% of the early wear.

There is not a single drop of "bluing" on the M4/M16. The black finish on steel parts is parkerizing, and the black finish on aluminum parts is anodizing. It annoys the shit our of me when people continuously use incorrect terminology.

Sorry, that's just the grunt term for it. I'll be sure to use the correct terms in the future.

The lower on my rifle does appear to be significantly older/more used than the upper though. Do you have any insight as to the military replacing uppers and reusing lowers?

And what does the VCAS Sling loop into at the butt stock end of an M16A4? Does it use the standard rear fixed swivel?

What is the current USMC fixed stock magazine holder?

Does the VCAS sling loop onto that?

The VCAS isn't being issued with M16A4's, but the guys that do run them usually use a buttstock adapter of some sort (I took mine off an old 3pt).

We're not issued any sort of buttstock mag holder. The only people I've seen running them are POGs that only shoot their rifles once a year on the range.

I hear you - I am under the impression, then, if the item is approved (but not issued) then it is up to the individual grunt to pony up their hard earned pay at the px or online.
