New guy with a custom lower I promise nobody has seen!

Hey guys. I am new here as I just started getting really into building AR's. I figured I'd share a lower I just gone done finishing. I know some of you won't like the design but others will. At least that's the going consensus in other forums. Most people seem to like it though. I just wanted something nobody else at the range would have.

It is milled from 7075-T7351. Alodined and finished off with a Ceramic Powder Coat.

Now I just need to figure out which upper I am placing on it. Any ideas of what would look good on her? Maybe a Seekins Billet?

holy **** thats a lower..dont ask me why but i swear it looks like the batmobile from the val kilmer one. Other than that front end i kinda dig it...that would get snagged on just about anything and serves no real purpose that I can think of...you have an explanation as to why?

regardless if you made it.. I appreciate the craftsmanship....you selling these? somebody may want an alien looking AR...

That does look unique, to be sure.

But it seems that some decisions were made with form taking precident over function.

With a utilitarian object like an AR, I would assume that many on this forum would agree that form should follow function. Mies Van Der Rohe would not be a fan of this lower indeed.

The reason I say this is I assume that the form of the magwell was to create a built in grip at the position. If this is the case, as I understand it, it is considered a less than optimal place for your support hand to be and creating a permanent grip there would only hinder the implementation of the weapon.

I do commend your skill if you milled the lower. Looks like a great deal of time and skill went into creating it.

I cant stop looking at it and I cant tell if its art or a train wreck...

Whats with the hole above were the grip goes?

I think if you could leave the grooves in the lower and lose the extension parts you would have have nailed it.. some of the crazies at arfcom would love it as it sits....I'll do a T&E on it if you wanna make me one...

My guess is that it's finger groves for a mag well grip. Instead of installing one of these: http://www.themakogroup.com/product_p/mwg.htm

    I kinda like it!

Yea, it is for the Magwell Grip which I prefer when using a short barreled carbine. I know some instructors don't like teaching it but it really does have it's place. In my opinion it is a optimal grip during close quarter combat and room clearing. It allows you to stay very tight.

I do agree though. When using a longer barreled rifle and going for a long range hit, the magwell grip would only hinder your accuracy.

The inside of the magwell has a couple different design decisions as well. There are stepped ramps in there that direct the magazine during high speed/high stress reloads. They guarantee a perfect seat every time no matter what angle you try throwing them in there at.
