This is why the military is moving away from anodizing and using Alodine when maximum corrosion resistance is needed. In the end however, 7075 aluminum or and decent aluminum is already extremely resistive to corrosion.

Here is an example of pitting causing corrosion.

I have seen literally tens of thousands of M4s and M16s in amphibious military service, and thousands of AR15s of various flavors in civilian/police use, and I have never seen that kind of corrosion on anodized weapon parts.

I have also never seen any weapon requirements that listed alodizing as a requirement, so I am interested in the source for that information.

What I have seen is non-anodized/non-treated areas (due to cuts through the anodizing or lack of coating) quickly wear and corrode.

Which is exactly why I'd be watching those FCG holes.

How much of a load does the receiver extension threads take?

I like it... the lower has character. Might be concerned about catching it on my gear though....

I certainly appreciate the machine work that went in to the piece. A lot more work than what's needed to produce the plain Jane lowers most produce.

I assume the builder has a multi-tool head on his CNC. How many tools are used to machine this unit?

I believe there was a total of 16 tools used in the milling process. You also have to have a pretty good CNC in order to get those angled cuts.

While I was there at his shop, he put on a pretty good show. He put a 80% lower (won't say which company) into a vise and had me hit the back where the buffer tube is with a hammer. It broke off into two pieces after one good whack. This particular company states they use 6065-T6 aluminum. Then he put one of his lowers into the vise and had me whack it with the hammer. Needless to say, his lower didn't break even after 4 attempts. I thought that was pretty impressive.

While I was at his shop he also showed me a belt fed upper sitting on top of one of these lowers. I was surprised to see it had a registered sear. That was pretty bad ass.

    But that's my personal opinion.

I would be concerned about the FCG holes egging out if they were drilled and reamed after hard coating.

Exactly my thoughts when i first saw it. Second thought was, obviously, somebody took a blowtorch to it and blew, pulled and pressed the shape of the so called magwell grip. Kind of reminds me of murano glass... No offense to them.

Mil-spec lowers are not made of 6065. (Which has a tensile strength of 45,000psi.)
They are 7075-T6, which has nearly twice the tensile strength.

You got taken by his show.

Very nice custom lower! Reminds me of the concept cars produced by manufactures at the auto show...fun to look at but not something I would want for myself.

I suspect Markm is talking Papabear into buying him one as we speak...

Not entirely sure why it would matter who made the lower in question, given that very few of us would be taking a hammer to the receiver extension, and if we did, it would be with no expectations of the part surviving that kind of abuse. I get the overriding point about strength, but receiver extension failures aren't exactly a common problem in the AR world.

I appreciate innovation as much as the next guy, but over wrought, fantasy-themed components are not exactly my forte, nor do I really understand the preoccupation with magwell holds. To each his own, of course.
