Personally never seen it with a mil spec weapon, seen plenty of dropped weapons onto concrete with no damage. The trigger guard ear breaking usually happens when people incorrectly install a trigger guard.
Speaking of the magwell grip. Like I said before it has its purpose and I strongly believe there is no better grip to use when you need to get tight such as during close quarter combat and/or clearing rooms. It's also a good grip to utilize when in a sitting position with support under the arm you are using for the grip. I don't use the magwell grip often but I do use it. I am a firm believer in being proficient with more than one or two grips.
I change grips depending on position, but never use the mag well, especially not in cqb. I actually think the mag well is even worse in close quarters because it slows follow up shots in a situation that needs them the fastest. And activating a light while using the mag well for positive target ID requires either leaving your light on (bad bad bad) or changing your grip back to how it normally is, which brings up the question, why change in the first place?
