Buffer/Spring set up in your Piston System

Just wanted to get some examples of what spring and buffer setups some of yall have in your piston guns. It is well time for me to replace my action spring and was maybe looking at a CS one. Specifically in piston guns what seems to be working well for you guys?

Ruger SR556c cut down to a true 14inch with FSC556. Also running H2 buffer with new colt spring now. This one is never shot supressed. I know alot of Pistons are overgassed, and even on setting "1" (most restrictive) with an H2 Buffer, with AE223 and PMC my bolt locks to the rear everytime. My agency issues 64gr Golddot, but I typically run whatever brass I come across. Would you suggest maybe getting an A5 system and Sprinco white and blue to test an evaluate?

Well, definitely the Vltor A5 system if you are willing to ef with it. I use the A5 system with A5H4 (heaviest 6.85oz buffer) and my 14.5" middy BCM locks back on empty every time. My agency issues Federal 62gr TBBC in .223 pressure and it locks back on empty every time.

A conversion is usually right around $100 for the RE tube, buffer spring, castle nut, receiver end-plate, and proprietary buffer.

If you want the most controllability, the Vltor A5 has has no equal.

If you want to stick with the carbine tube (I know how some agencies get about modding your gun....even if it's YOUR GUN), a Springco WHITE and an H3, or maybe try a BLUE with your H2 would be worth experimenting.

I also recommend adding a Springco, BCM, or Colt Copper-washed extractor spring on any piston gun since extraction happens sooner and tends to happen faster than on DI guns. Even if you're running fine now, it's cheap insurance.

I tried every quality (and some not) carbine spring, along with every buffer aside from an Enidine.....and I was not able to attain a setup that was as reliable and smooth-shooting as the Vltor A5.

I would rec that you look at either the Vltor A5H3 (6.05oz) or A5H4 (6.85oz) buffer for your piston setup.

I found that it was a fine balance between managing increased spring pressure via XP carbine buffer springs and having a carbine buffer weight that would still cycle and lock back on empty. Also, too much ass on the carbine buffer spring and you can start getting muzzle-dip when the BCG returns to battery. Every gun is different.

BTJ, that is all very helpful, and as long as it runs we can pretty much do whatever we want here. Can I still use carbine stocks like the ACS-L with the A5? I already have 5 BCM extractor springs on the way, thanks.

Carbine stocks are fine as long as they are mil-spec diameter (not commercial). They just wont' collapse all the way. You'll likely only be able to collapse them to the first notch. The A5 RE tube is .75" longer than a std carbine tube.

So, unless it's an entry gun and you are wearing entry gear, the stock should be short enough for you. I use an STR and it collapses fully with no gap at the front. I use the enhanced buttpad and run it one notch out without my soft armor and fully collapsed with soft armor.

The ACS-L will collapse all the way to the castle nut.

    Any other questions?

I may just give the A5 a shot as I like to tinker with shit. Oh ya, I saw a thread back on here somewhere about you polishing up a bcg? Was thinking about hitting some rough spots on mine, what did you use?

The A5 really is as good as people say it is. Reliable and smooth. You may even benefit from a Springco Green A5 spring, but try the std Vltor spring first. Buffer weight had the biggest effect on smoothing the recoil impulse in my experience.

I used two methods to polish the bolt carrier rails, the bottom where the hammer rides, and the sides of the gas key. I used a shop cloth and jeweler's rouge as well as a dremel and a grey felt polishing tip with no compound at very low speed and light pressure.

If you have a hard-chromed carrier, you can be a little more aggressive as HC is very hard. But, go slow so heat build-up is kept very low. I basically used my finger to feel how smooth it was.

Also, use plenty of Slip 2000 EWL when running the gun. That stuff is slick.

I have an M6A5 from LWRC with an adjustable gas block. It has peak performance with a Sprinco blue spring (enhanced power) and an H3 buffer.
