its actually more like 1" difference since pinned muzzle devices are longer than their normal counterparts

That sucks man but if your smith has any integrity at all, he should make it right. Even if he has to destroy the BC, he should buy you another to make it right. I would be pretty hot if I had that happen to me.
Only time I've ever had a MD on upside down was on purpose. On my M&P 15-22 while I was trying to increase muzzle rise. Trying to replicate the real thing.

This is why I do all the work myself. Thank god I have access to machine shop equipment and master welders.

That's a screw up for sure. Gunsmith needs to correct it for you on his time and his dime.

This is what happens when you find your gunsmith on arfcom
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

    RE: Battlecomp question

Fwiw I had my BC installed upside down, but in my case it wasn't pinned as it was on a 16" gun. The dude fixed ASAP when I pointed it out.

You can turn a compensator or similar MD on upside down to try and more closely mimic muzzle climb on the real thing. Used to do this on my M&P 15-22. Stole the idea from Robb Jensen.
