True 1x to 4 optics are going to be the future standard, in my opinion. For most 556 guns a 1-6x is perfect and requires nothing else in terms of optics but a 1-4 will be just as effective and applicable for most 556 users.

I just went shooting Saturday, and for the first time went beyond 200 yards, which I can do fairly easy shooting 12" or maybe more steel. This guy (he was really cool) with a spotter scope just randomly said he'd help me shoot out to distance. I used both a 2moa Aimpoint and iron sights.

After a few adjustments, I was hitting a metal ram or pig at- I could not make out what it was, it just was pink lol- center mass or its front legs. It was difficult, but that was bench shooting not prone which I prefer, and I was not really under pressure, except being the only one shooting and the few people there were watching me.

Next was a man sized silhouette at 600 yards- I think, again I was just told what it was I never saw it. I think I hit it more with iron sights, but it was really difficult for me. When I got the holdover down, only my windage would be off, I got a lot of shoulder shots, I think, but overall more misses

All in all, with skill you can hit distant targets with a RDS, however, identify a real person from that far is impossible and I would not risk it unless I knew him to be hostile and or shooting at me.

I really liked it, especially because it had the BDC and the eye relief didn't seem wonky like it can with traditional scopes.

Since I am more interested in shooting targets at this time (I can't really do run and gun shit; much less when I can't even drop mags in CA), I think I will just look around for an ACOG like this. It should fit my range needs nicely. I'm sure that if I even get to go to a carbine class or something, that I can find/borrow an aimpoint.

I think (but I'm not 100% sure about it) that I may have an astigmatism with my shooting eye anyway, and this isn't an issue with the ACOG).
I highly recommend a supplemental close range sighting system if going with one of the 4x ACOGs.
For what they are, I like the TA01 NSN the most of the 4x line, but they are absolutely a nightmare for close range work under real-world conditions.

At the ranges you're shooting at 1x, will that fuzzyness matter?

that's entirely up to you. what distance are you talking about? what degree of precision do you need?..

When you say close range, what kind of distance are you talking about?

3-50 meters, depending on lighting and movement.
Basically, under the conditions that one would be most concerned about getting all shot up in.

The guy who owned the ACOG I tried did admit to me that the "iron sights" it came with were garbage. I didn't really try them as I was interested in the glass.
