Here's my M4, don't laugh at me U jerks: II

My adventures from the first post was I got rid of the clunky Shlubmaster with silly stuff hanging off it and ended up with a Colt 6940. Although not the specific M4 that was recommended to me at the time, it was considered a big improvement and got general thumbs up from the M4C BTDT types.

Due to where I live and some other factors, choices can be very limited, and that was before the current panic buying.

Since then I have shot it with the iron sites and approx 3k rnds though it usually at 100 yards or less. Zero malfunctions or problems. Range time, courses, etc have been handgun oriented for me, so M4 is a secondary platform to me as a civi and does not get range love as it should and is not an area of expertise for me, so I rely on M4C for most of my info and advice.

Current costs in ammo, etc, has only hurt there too. When I have more time and $$$, I plan to get some courses done.

I decided it was time for an optic, and went with the Aimpoint Patrol Optic. It was not my first choice, but I know it's not a bad choice, and deal offered for it too good to pass up. Have not had chance to zero it yet, but red dot sits just above front site as is.

Only things added were the Magpul AFG and magwell grip.

I know I know, magwell grip is no bueno. Is another of those things that was given to me to try by a vendor, so on there right now to play with. I know that grip is not considered GTG by most modern trainers. Only thing I can say is, that one is beveled and acts like a magwell on a pistol making mag inserts faster perhaps, but it's on there right now for sh*%s and giggles and probably will not remain.

The AFG does not seem to work all the great due to how short the rail is on the Colt. It's comfortable enough, but to get the arm out there and the leverage, I'm thinking a VFG (or something else?) out as far as I can get it without my support hand coming in contact with the barrel might be the way to go.

Feedback, thoughts, recs, (and usual ball busting...)?

Sweet Will I tried the magpul VFG, did not suit me so I gave it away and went with a chopped VFG. Rifle looks good never tried the mag well thing, never will to many years of being told not to hold it there and why from back in the day.

great choice, nothing to laugh at!
if it was me, I would be looking for a new stock and pistol grip first, but in your situation, use what feels best. you are right about the AFG and magwell grip, it might be wise to look into a stubby VFG instead like the Tango Down, Magpul RVG, or LaRue FUG.
either way you did great, good luck out there!

The magwell grip makes me want to stop eating protein just to spite you.

Congratulations. If you're happy with the gun and it runs, then leave it as is.

But since you ask for opinions, we know what that means, every smart alec has one of those, here's mine.

I arrived at this style of AR/modifications after at least five iterations of guns/upper.

    First the picture:

I would get rid of the magwell grip doodad, sounds like you're not all that attached to it anyway. Next to go is the AFG thing. I have handled it on other peoples guns and I see no advantage over a simple VFG or none at all.

If you want to go extreme, I'd ditch those Matech sights (front and rear). Go with a sturdier rear sight like the Daniel Defense A1.5 or the Larue. Replace the front with a low profile gas block and install a longer handguard. The Troy and the Daniel Defense MFR both are low profile, lightweight and available in longer length to cover the gas block. I like the Daniel Defense front, simple and sturdy.

The longer handguard tube allows placement of a lightweight compact light at 12 o'clock.

Nothing wrong with your Aimpoint PRO. Although the H-1/T-1 are lighter.

Of course, don't forget the Blue Force Gear Vickers sling.

Just my two cents. Bottom line is, if you can find ammo, shoot the hell out of the gun.

I've been on the forward grip merry go round myself. You can read about them all you want, both from random internet people like myself and professional trainers, but you still want to try them all....

In the end, you can't get off the merry go round until you start quantifying your shooting and your improvements or problems various grips. Even then, the need will arise to re-evaluate your forward grip (and any gear) periodically as you improve.

Looks like a nice clean set-up to me. Why would anyone laugh at that?

I think your gun is a fine piece of hardware, nothing to laugh at.

    1. Magwell grip....well you know LOL

    2. The one complaint about the 6940 is the lack of options for the rail system ( you have none ), but if you want to mount a light the Thorntail mount might be an option to get the light out of the way.

    3. A simple handstop or low pro VFG would work just fine. You may not even find it necessary. I'm still running slick/stock M4 handguards.........*gasp

    4. I like the Matech alot after running one for a bit, but the unit has it's downfalls and quirks. I'm going to replace mine with a KAC when/if mine dies ( the locking mechanism/locking mechanism pin is prone to failure after use on some units ). I love the size of the actual sight post and the KAC seems to be the closest in design.

    5. The PRO is gtg, mine has exceeded my expectations. The mount is a little wonky but I havent had any issues with zero/coming loose/or snagging the locking handle on gear.

    6. Vickers sling

    7. as for stocks and grips and things, good frigging luck. I've gone back in time with an A1 grip and N1 stock and it feels right. Thats all personal choice. You are better off sinking money into a metric butt ton of ammo and quality magazines as prices and availability become better.

I wouldnt worry too much and just take all this stuff into consideration. You have done well for yourself.... Shoot the piss out of her!

Since you don't want to listen about the AFG and magwell thingy
I would recommend swapping the terrible A2 grip with either a MIAD or MOE/MOE+, or try grinding off the front bump. It's one of the single best improvements to the gun.
I also like to use a trigger guard, grip, or gap filler to fill the gap between the trigger guard and grip.
There are also much better selector levers.
Good light mount can make a huge difference, I'm partial to the Danger Close and M600/300.

    Hey Will,
How deep into MA are you? If you can't find what you want locally there are some places in NH that should have what you want. I go to a place not too far off exit 9 from 93. I's say its less than 45 min from Andover.
