This is the angle an AFG should be vs your rail length given where your hand is in relation to your shoulder.

The AFG angle is simply too shallow to be use correctly on a carbine length rail. On a middy rail, it works fine.

I just go with a VFG and a high-hand hold on a carbine length rail.
Thax for the info. I learned the hard way that AFG didn't work well (for me) with that gun. I'll try a stubby VFG or hand stop and see what the result is. Unlike some things, not an expensive proposition to try a few options.

The question is: do you actually need it?
If it's just something you want, that's cool, but sticking a VFG onto a rail doesn't make the rail longer, and the only way to extend the arm/grip is to move the majority of the gripping function from the handguard to the VFG, which is not optimal from a marksmanship perspective.

Which is why I say; spend some time on gun with a bare handguard to establish a baseline and figure out exactly what/where improvements could/should be made.

    Will,

I've got a 6940 also and have tried the AFG, the TD STubby VFG and a couple of other VFG's off other rifles. I haven't found the right fit for myself yet.
I'm running an Inforce WML without the Thorntail mount also. My next combo I plan to try is a simple hand stop and add the Thorntail to move the WML up slightly.

The Magpul VFG has a nice contour that works nice for a handstop. Using a rope hold on the rail, the side of my palm rests right in that contour. Comfortable and stable. I'm sure there are better options but these work well for me and they don't break the bank.

Due to where I live and some other factors, choices can be very limited, and that was before the current panic buying.

Since then I have shot it with the iron sites and approx 3k rnds though it usually at 100 yards or less. Zero malfunctions or problems. Range time, courses, etc have been handgun oriented for me, so M4 is a secondary platform to me as a civi and does not get range love as it should and is not an area of expertise for me, so I rely on M4C for most of my info and advice.

Current costs in ammo, etc, has only hurt there too. When I have more time and $$$, I plan to get some courses done.

I decided it was time for an optic, and went with the Aimpoint Patrol Optic. It was not my first choice, but I know it's not a bad choice, and deal offered for it too good to pass up. Have not had chance to zero it yet, but red dot sits just above front site as is.

Only things added were the Magpul AFG and magwell grip.

I know I know, magwell grip is no bueno. Is another of those things that was given to me to try by a vendor, so on there right now to play with. I know that grip is not considered GTG by most modern trainers. Only thing I can say is, that one is beveled and acts like a magwell on a pistol making mag inserts faster perhaps, but it's on there right now for sh*%s and giggles and probably will not remain.

The AFG does not seem to work all the great due to how short the rail is on the Colt. It's comfortable enough, but to get the arm out there and the leverage, I'm thinking a VFG (or something else?) out as far as I can get it without my support hand coming in contact with the barrel might be the way to go.

Feedback, thoughts, recs, (and usual ball busting...)?

Looks good. BRD at its best. Minus magwell doo dad as many have mentioned. I also dropped the AFG on a carbine. Just not enough real estate to be comfortable. Actually dropped the entire DD Omega 7" rail. Slapped a kryloned MOE handguard. I found out I didn't need a rail for my civi AR.

Next upper will most likely be a 14.5 middy with a rail and no FSP.

    1. All firearms are ALWAYS loaded.
    2. Don't point the muzzle at anything you're not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're on the target and ready to shoot.
    4. Be sure of your target and backstop.

Seriously Will, I also have a 6940 still in the box. Every single 6940 that I have fired has had excellent accuracy out of the box. As others have mentioned I find them a bit restrictive on how I like to grip the weapon. I also do not care for the front or rear sights. I wouldn't run the magwell grip, but no big deal. I used to run AFG's quite a bit, then started doing my own custom chops on them, re-glassing the rear, making them into what they should have been from the factory. I really do like them over my old standard stubby VFG's. However my AFG's have gone to the wayside mostly because it was annoying when I wanted to rest my rifle on something. I now have come full circle and do not use a forend grip of any type.

Overall, it is a solid rifle!

Agreed, I've probably shot 6 maybe 8 different ones over the last 6 months or so and every one has been a great shooter out of the box. But as others have mentioned, the drawbacks are - no hand guard options, the length of supplied hand guard and the so-so sights. Colt should skipped the front sight and installed a railed gas block instead, with extended hand guard.
