    ar10 vs a5 RE

I read that the a5 reciever extension can be used on an ar10, but vltor says the reverse will not work. I was wondering if anyone knew why.

The A5 tube is the same internal length as the AR10 CAR tube.

What are they saying wont work?

What are you thinking of doing?

Could you used an ar10 carbine extension, ar15 rifle spring and an a5 buffer?

You can use an AR10 RE with an ar15 rifle spring and a5 buffer on an ar15/m16. Infact, IINM, they even refer to it as the A5 short rail.

When using an A5 RE on a 308, you need to use a 308 carbine spring and an AR15 carbine buffer.

You never use an A5 buffer, ever, in a 308 gun.

EDIT: doh thought I was in the 308 section. Carry on.

And would that effectively be an a5 system?

Yep. I run an RE-10/A5 SR with an A5 buffer and spring just so any stock I put on it will fit without failing to lock in the last position. My B5 Bravo sits about an inch from the castle nut when fully collapsed and fully extended it gives me 15" LOP.

Yes that is the short rail vltor setup that got me thinking. But what I'm asking is if you could use any ar10 carbine extension instead of the vltor short rail. Vltor says you can't but I don't se why not.

    Technically, you can.

If you have one lying around, by all means, use it and rock on.

If you are putting together a lower from scratch, i recommend just getting the VLTOR tube.

It is a VERY high quality tube for about $2 more than a similar quality CAR extension from vltor or LMT and $8 more than a good quality CAR extension and $15 more than the AR10 extension from the original AR company.

    It's a no-brainer.
