    Likely true, though still unfortunate.

There are more than 137,000 members on 1911forum, and at least three or four of them are idiots. I guess that does lead to some Draconian housecleaning at times, just as it has here from time to time.

I always try to salvage everybody, but every once in a while, you encounter one of those unreachable guys who is far more interested in bloviation than discussion. Not much you can do in those cases.

    Guys,

1911forum.com is a great site, no doubt. I've spent hundreds of hours getting good info out of that site. What makes it a good site is the fact that you have real, honest to god 1911 master gunsmiths taking the time to asnwer questions and post info.

    However........

In the last year or so many, in fact almost all of those smiths have been spending more time at 1911pro.com. Think of it as the 1911 forum with the fat trimmed out.

I would join both forums get comfortable with the search button. You could acutally publish books on highly techincal info that has already been posted on those sites, if you know how to search for it.

    Good Luck!

Definitely one of the hazards of growth. You start a resource, bring in experts to really help the place establish itself as a worthy destination, and then open the front door to see who shows up. Good guys find the place, great discussions ensue, a site culture is established and suddenly the site has a reputation as a "go to" resource.

Then the clown bus pulls up.

Some of these guys will pick up on the nuances, realize there are some adjustments to be made, and settle in nicely. Others will bring their habits and foolish behaviors in with them, and chafe against anyone who tries to steer them in a more appropriate direction. The signal-to-noise ratio eventually gets inverted. Subject Matter Experts complain to site management that the site is changing, and not for the better. Some window-licker with zero experience gets into a jousting session with an expert over the ideal number of coils in a buffer spring, and the expert decides to wash his hands of the whole mess. He goes off and start another site, where the process starts all over again.

That is why we are fairly insistent around here that folks assimilate the site culture, rather than permitting them to shift our baselines and bring the site around to the norms that they might have found familiar elsewhere -- places that no serious-minded guy really wants to frequent any longer. Finding the right balance point in all of this is just one of those jobs that is never finished, but the day we stop fighting for it is the day that we should probably pull the plug. So it goes across the web. Little wonder that staffers get so weary sometimes.

    AC,

Are they still doing all the Glock bashing on that site? I signed up to learn about the 1911 and stopped going there because, regardless of topic, it always, ALWAYS, ended in bashing Glocks. Im not trying to sound like a fanboy but the same old topic phrased a thousand different ways gets old. And for some reason its only Glock

Hilton Yam's site, Modern Service Weapons, is a good source for 1911 information. Hilton Yam provides a ton of information for a service grade 1911.
Hilton's other site is 10-8 Performance. It is geared more to the 1911.

I can't really say, as I don't spend the amount of time there that I do here, but I suspect whoever had acquired a taste for Glock bashing over there still has it. It is probably an overreaction to the whole "Glock Perfection" cult, because plastic gun fans can get pretty ridiculous too; that said, I've never understood why folks need to belittle one product in order to feel better about their own.

Fortunately, I haven't seen much of that sort of thing lately (there or here), but it is one of the characteristics of a newer, less mature member -- or an older one that has never been reined in for whatever reason. I've never warmed-up to Glocks myself, but I think they are fine pistols for their intended aims, and they certainly meet a need for a large percentage of the shooting public.

Best 1911 forum I've seen. A lot less of the silliness and more technical.

They do seem to be off to a good start, but the membership base is only 236 folks at the moment. The clown bus hasn't yet arrived.

I've been on 1911.pro for a couple years now. I like it because it's nearly 100% technical, and heavily favored toward gunsmithing methods, machining, and techniques.

The posting there is sparse, but the information is good.

If you're thinking about sending a 1911 to a smith, look up each operation on 1911pro. Most tasks are detailed there. There may not be alot of pictures, and you will have to do some research to understand the machining terms, but it will give a technical insight to what you are asking your smith to do.
