this pistol is owned by a member here. I hope he doesn't mind me using his pics. He's using a colt with a caspian rail, surefire x200 and a DG18 switch (Kimber TLE with rails, SIG GSR 1911 with rails, Springfield 1911 TRP with rails)

notice how much lower the switch sits under the handguard:

and notice the same setup on a factory railed gun:

and this is that same gun trying to get into a safariland 6280 for a railed 1911. that's as far as it would get into the holster

Years ago I installed the Caspian Recon Rail on a Springfield Armory 1911. As the photos above depict, I had trouble finding a duty holster for this set up. I finally got it to work with a Sarfariland SLS for a Glock 21. I was never happy with the setup. I removed the rail and had the three holes welded in and the gun refinished.

My personal recommendation is to buy a factory railed gun. Absent that get a rail that, when installed, has the same profile as the factory version of that gun and will fit in the same holsters.

    1911 Add on rail

Remember, that the lowest profile rail, will be a railed frame. the next slimmest is the dawson, the next being rails like the Novak. in holster systems like the safariland duty holsters, you can shove the 1911/novak/surefire light into a holster made for a bigger light. But in tightly fitted holsters like the raven, it's a no-go. the holster has to perfectly match the contours of the gun.

Hilton Yam's 1911 Light Resource describes the pros and cons of the various rails. Note that they do not endorse the dawson anymore, mainly because you can get frames with a light rail from the factory, and the surefire adapter is very specific. However, IMO, if you have a frame that you WANT a light rail on, and you want to use a surefire, it's the best option.

    Thanks for the info Janitor.

What's the difference between the RCS U/P latch or Rail lock holster?
    Which one did you get?

I assume the Dawson adapter works the same for the SF300U as well right?

It's looking like the Dawson's gonna end up on my Colt.

The u/p is the standard quick detach latch. the rail lock is the bolt on option from sure fire. It basically bolts the light to the rail, eliminating the quick release feature. since the external dimensions are different, RCS wants to know what system you will use. I'm using the u/p system. And the current six hole adapter fits all models of the x300

I'd just like to remind anyone looking to add on a rail, that ANY rail is not a better option that getting a frame with a rail designed and built into it. every rail system has its pros and cons. Fore ME, the Dawson rail was the best option, and fit my needs the best

quality guns like the CRG and the TRP, make these options nearly obsolete. but if you're a guy like me, who sinks serious money into every 1911 he has, and buying another gun is out of the question, add on rails make a lot of sense

Isn't the Novak supposed to have the same profile as a normal railed 1911?

It appears as if the Dawson light speed adapters for the Mars rail are out of stock—waiting to hear back from Dawson on whether or not they're getting more soon.

this is a pic straight from novak's website:

notice how much that the light sits lower than that of the TRP shown above? it may be hard to judge because of the light is activated in the novak pic. But look at the relationship of the battery cover latch to the triggerguard. in rigs like the raven, fractions of an inch matter

ironically enough, the Colt pic I posted on page one is a Novak built gun...with a Dawson rail.

Thanks Janitor, it's clear as day when compared side by side.

ETA: For anyone wanting to order the Dawson light speed adapter for the Mars rail the lead time is 4-6 weeks. They don't charge your card till it ships.

That rail looks exactly like the Dawson rails. What make it better?

Here's a Springfield, not mine, with the Dawson rail.
