In addition the average soldier is not allowed to even remove parts from the lower receiver. If you read the operators manual it will show just how far one can/ cannot go.

I wasn't thinking of the ordinary grunt who didn't have access to YouTube. I was thinking of the guys who are supposed to maintain them. Secretary of Defense McNamara was a big efficiency guy.

Then I guess it would interest you to know that McNamaras' idiots (IIRC) were the ones who made changes to the design without Colts knowledge that caused some of the initial failures.

Being efficient doesn't make him right.
But I'd always heard that the problems were from things other than design - switching to cheaper powder, failure to educate on cleaning, etc.

You do indeed. Switch from IMR type powder to Winchester ball which increased powder residue. Deleting the chrome lined bore & chamber which allowed corrosion to form between the brass and chamber. Issuing the rifles without cleaning gear because it was supposed to be self-cleaning. On top of it all, the rifle was issued without field trials to test the changes. (Colt had to know about the changes, especially the barrel specs. McNamara's Whiz Kids did over-rule the Army to have the changes made.)

Folks bag on the AR because it did so poorly in 'Nam when it was released for general issue. But prior to the changes being made, the rifle was tested heavily in the jungles of South East Asia and did very well

Interesting. I was told that the changes were implemented without the knowledge (what I think I meant or what I was told was the engineers didn't know- not the people cranking out the weapons).

Unfortunately it's a stigma that's followed it around for the past 40 years.
Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.

This is true. I spent my tour field stripping and doing things like using a steel cleaning rod to make the barrel shine where it meets the flash suppressor. Anything more detailed had to be done by the armorer.
