He was leaking heavily from his left side and there definitely looks like a blood spot dead center on his back. He wasn't going to last much longer, but he was quitting either. Nice final shot by the cop.

That vehicle should've been checked upon approach, easy mistake to make though...

As stated previously, fortunate for the officers that the dude only popped out with a handgun.

I think the hit to the head was a precise shot, not just luck. The perp also left his foot out from behind the tree and it looks like he was shot there as well

I don't know the details of case, but I'm assuming this would not be considered a low risk adventure? I would think at least one person with a long gun would be there no? Had that guy come out the car with something other than what appears probably a compact .380 or 9mm, things could have ended real ugly.

I don't know the SOP for that PD, but they are no strangers to violent people more than willing to defend their stuff and start shooting in that area, so what struck me was the lack of at least one long gun.

Can any LE comment on that?

I'm sure I will get flamed for this but I think it is interesting that the guy the cops talked to (not the shooter) is getting charged with felony murder because he was growing weed and the cops (justifiably) killed his buddy.

PS. The shooter must've taken quite the shot to the chest. The blood stain is dead center high thoracic! Both that, and the head shot were skillfully done!

Certain law enforcement organizations prohibit or frown their troopers/officers from showing up to disturbances, domestics, etc with their longarm. So the weapon ends up sitting In the vehicle. I'm not sure what the deal was in this specific case being that the Leo's were probably an instigations or narc unit given the plain clothes and unmarked vehicles. Also, as an aside, people would be amazed the amout of guys in my agency that don't check out a longarm.

I am LE in the same area as this event. My understanding of this event is that they had a tip regarding the residence and were just going to knock and ask for consent to search. The neighborhood is an upper middle class type neighborhood. I think this is just a case of complacency.

Did one of the police officers get hit? it looks like one of them got shot. If so hope he recovers.

as far as the guy flopping around after the headshot... I've shot lots of pigs in the head and they almost always flop around where they drop.

Article states that they showed up to search a MJ grow house.

    WRT no long gun.

Some agencies and units within agencies use a threat matrix, or at least chalk talk how they're going to deal with a search warrant or a consent search. I don't know what the history is with these two guys, but if this is Miami-Dade that we're talking about, I'm sure they have an SOP for how to roll if they suspect that the subjects associated with the address are violent or have access to long guns.

Apparently, the intel at hand didn't lend itself to rolling heavy or using SWAT, but an officer still could have slung a long gun. So why no long gun?

I'll offer this: the article says that the police were there to search the residence, but doesn't state "how". The link on the Blaze's page goes to the article from the Miami Herald. That article stated that the cops were there for a "knock and talk". Read that as "Front door interview with an eye towards getting a consent search".

In that case, the officers are likely expecting minimal resistance in getting to the door (based on whatever intel they had). Once there, they probably want to put on their best face. That means fewer cops, and no one completely tac'd out (might taint the consent if the resident believes that, if they refuse, the cops will just bust down the door anyways).

    So, in summation:

-Intel indicates few occupants= fewer cops
-Intel reveals no/little propensity for violence (weed guys, after all)=fewer cops/roll light
-Intel indicates a smaller operation=fewer cops
-Consent search (must show no signs of coercion)=roll light

I wasn't there, I'm not a drug cop or a narc, but I do occasionally do these. Just some possibilities as to why this went down the way it did.

Weed isn't dangerous, but the big business surrounding it is.
The advice above is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I'm sorry it went down like this, but someone had to loose. It's the nature of the business.....
