Also, you don't need to engage the safety to separate upper from lower.
Again, I didn't explain myself well, and I left out a few steps while typing. Sorry for the confusion. Not using a keyboard to type, and when I previewed my post, my mind filled in the missing steps. To clarify, when I get a new rifle, or am handed one, I usually:
1: eject mag if one is inserted
2: pull charging handle to make sure it's cleared
3: lock bolt to function test (if new)
4: DEPRESS BOLT RELEASE, leaving hammer back so I can put in safety
(I am now aware this is unnecessary, but it has become habit)
    5: disassemble upper from lower

In this case, couldn't get through steps 3 and 4. Carrier was stuck in RE, further than it should have been. I assumed it was locked, so pressed bolt release. Nothing happened. Which is the reason for my post. Was technically not locked, but stuck. I hope I am being more clear with my problem and not coming across as a total dumbass (which I'm sure it's too late for that).

    Not a problem.

What happened when you tried to rack the CH with no mag inserted?

    Absolutely nothing. Loose charging handle.
There was no tension, so assumed it was already locked back. Tried bolt release, nothing.

Even if a bolt is locked back you should still be able to release it by pulling the CH all the way back.

If you pulled it all the way back then I suppose it could have been caught on something.. but I'm not sure what could have caught it. I'd inspect the retaining pin perhaps, and see if you can see anything unusual.

But as it seems now, I'd prob just go shoot it and wouldn't worry unless it happened again.

After it dislodged, it went to locked position. Felt like it moved maybe an inch? Hard to tell. But from there I was able to press bolt catch, and it released like it should have the first time. I charged it a few times, locked it back and released it a few times, and took it apart. I couldn't find anything, but haven't yet taken out buffer and spring. Out at work for the next few days so won't be able to check immediately. I was just wondering if anybody has had this happen or had seen this before, and what could possibly cause it.

I suggest you either watch some GOOD videos with explanations on how to operate the weapon or find someone who knows how to do it. You seem not only confused on how to manipulate the weapon, but also the correct terminology.

Thought that's why I was here ... I already admitted I was still learning terminology. And while nobody has ever taken the time to show me anything useful about the system, I've never had any real problems. I'm pretty good at hitting what I'm aiming at, and I do it safely. The only problem I've ever had was a few failure to ejects with lacquered cases from a Bushmaster. And while I greatly respect your knowledge and experience, your comment does nothing to teach me about what happened. A few of you seem to be overlooking the fact that the problem was present before I even touched the rifle. Not sure how I can be more clear. I pulled on the charging handle, nothing happened. Pressed bolt catch to release, nothing happened. Carrier was too far back.

Take it apart to inspect buffer and spring. Make sure RE is screwed in enough to completely retain retaining pin without forward pressure from buffer.

Risking smackdown, I hesitantly ask: Have you inspected the BCG? Is the side pin holding the firing pin in place protruding or deformed?
