Tested my buddies 10.3" H&K 416 (Gen 1 - Heavy barrel profile) upper on my Vltor A5 SBR lower equipped with a green Sprinco rifle spring and an A5H3 buffer. Let me just tell you it was bliss! It ran like a sewing machine both suppressed and non-suppressed. I fired off rounds with almost no ability to tell the rifle had cycled, it was that smooth. The damn thing had ZERO recoil, it was as if I discovered a new perfect combination, a firearm peanut butter and jelly combo. A little food for thought, I measured the gas port @ .063 on this barrel (I am the armorer who assembled the upper) with it's location about .50" further forward than standard location on an AR15 barrel. Whatever the Krauts did, it became black magic when paired with the A5 system.

Here is the list of data I compiled. I am sure it is listed somewhere else but I hope this helps some of you that are still looking for this information. Just a note I personally recommend buying and using a genuine Vltor A5 buffer that is in the weight you are looking for. I am also unsure of the internals on the A5H4 buffer as I did not have one to experiment with so if someone would like to update that please do. The A5 buffers have some small changes from older ones, as stated the finish material is different and also the buffer tips are different in transparency or maybe material.

The A5 buffers have 4 total weights with the first one behind the tip having a tiny spring in the center, the tip also has a cutout for the spring to fit into when put together. I was told the A5A4 has 4 total weights, 2 weights with an indentation for a spring, one that I am sure of and this spring is uniform for the Vltor A5 buffers, it is right behind the tip and the other spring is on the last weight, but I am unsure of the location of the second spring or if this is true, I have noticed that the rear of each buffer internally has an indent much like the circumference of the spring so it would make sense to me that the location of the spring to be against the interior wall facing opposite the first spring. There are 4 total spacers, 1 in-between each weight, no spacer exists between the tip and first weight/spring. The Vltor A5 buffer has 4 weights. The majority of the weights listed are according to my scale and meant to be an estimate or approximate weight only. What I noticed since I started this was that the A5H1 and A5H2 in addition to the green Sprinco spring works generally very well with carbine length systems and the A5H2 & A5H3 in addition to the green Sprinco buffer spring work very well with Mid-length gas systems. This is not always the case, I feel that you have to add in a few factors when determining what will work best for your AR. What ammo will you be using, suppressed or unsuppressed? What type of gas block are you using? Etc. It is like finding out what recipe works best for your weapon and when asking which buffer to use, some of these factors should be included in the base of your question. The information I have included is just for informational purposes and it is mearly my findings yours may vary. I appreciate those that sent me their buffers to experiment with.

IG feel free to move or delete if you feel necessary.

We out last weekend and did some more night shooting.

Carbine 1- 16" Colt 6920 barrel with BCM Comp, Vltor A5H3, and green Springco spring. Fired a variety of 5.56 loadings (M855, Federal Independence M193, and the 60gr. markm loads). As usual no malfunctions and everything cycled 100%.

Rifle 2- FN 20" upper with Battle Comp, Vltor A5H4, green Springco spring and LMT enhanced bolt carrier. Same ammo types as above. No malfunctions and everything cycles extremely smooth. This is probably the smoothest rifle I have fired.

I'm thinking of running the BattleComp with a VLTOR A5H3, green Springco and LMT E-BCG along a DD 14.5 middy. Would you run/recommend such setup? Thoughts?

One of my guys is running something very similar with a Noveske middy. I can't honestly say to be honest.

    Another data point

11.5" SBR, .067" GP, Surefire 556-212 can, standard A5 spring
XM193 and 75gr handloads (23.4gr Ramshot TAC, Remington bench rest 7.5) in PMAGS

    VLTOR A5 standard, BCM BCG
    unsuppressed - no issues
    suppressed - no issues

VLTOR A5 standard, LMT enhanced carrier, BCM bolt
    unsuppressed - no issues
    suppressed - no issues

    VLTOR A5H4, BCM BCG
    unsuppressed - no issues
    suppressed - no issues

VLTOR A5H4, LMT enhanced carrier BCM bolt
    unsuppressed - no issues
    suppressed - no issues

I could feel the standard A5 hit the back of the receiver extension and feel it go into battery. The -H4 and LMT enhanced carrier rocked, especially with the suppressor on. The cycling felt much more even and smoother - not the 'ca-chunk' feeling I got from the standard A5. As expected, I notice more crap spewing from the ejection port, and less blowback through the CH with the enhanced carrier.

SBR locked back on empty in all aforementioned scenarios.

The exception to my previous setup compared to yours was that I was using a LW DD 14.5 and it locked back every time with PMC Bronze. Not sure what extractor and gas ring setup you have. Mine was a BCM extractor upgrade kit minus o ring and McFarland gas ring.

Wow, reading his parts list on paper...I would've guessed it wouldn't lock back on PMC and the like. Yours must be smooooooth.

I'm wondering if I should run the LMT bolt but It seems most of you guys prefer to run a milspec bolt instead. I have a spare Colt that has been upgraded to 5 coil extractor spring from Springco and stock gas rings that I will run if I need to. How does that sound?
