    PSA:

There are several temporary stop-gap solutions that allow you to use a lower built with an A5 RE until the supply of proper buffers returns.

These methods require attention to detail similar to what one should apply while reloading.

Failure to do so could result in damage.

Aways verify proper recoil stroke after a buffer swap by pulling the charging handle back to full recoil and holding.

Pay particular attention to clearance behind the gas key and the clearance between the bolt lug face and bolt catch.

Use the following at your own risk.

    1) Put a .99" dia x 0.75" long aluminum or steel spacer in the bottom of the tube. This will effectively convert the tube back to CAR length. Then, any valid CAR buffer and spring combination can be used.

    2) involves a special spacer, rifle spring and CAR length buffer.

    3) involves a shortened rifle buffer and flatwire spring.

#2 is what I have in several of my ARs. Took a slug of 7075, 15/16" diameter x 3/4" long, turned it down to 3/4" diameter all but 1/16", and inserted it into the bottom of an A2 spring. Install that with an H3 carbine buffer and you have an A5 system except for the internal spring in the A5 buffer. Don't know exactly what difference the spring is supposed to make, but I can't feel the difference between my setup and a complete A5. Both seem to work just fine when used with the same upper, even a 14.5" middy. If you need something heavier than an H3 buffer, you would have to obtain a custom-made, extra-heavy carbine buffer, like the ones Slash makes.

    Yes,

that's it, and probably the easiest/best option if all things are considered.

I made a shortened rifle buffer (option #3) last night.

Note, the only spring that will work with this buffer is the SSS flat wire spring.

To create, disassemble the buffer and take out the 5 weights, rubber disks and aluminum spacer.

Measure 1.93" from the back end.

Use a pipe cutter to make the cut.

Clean up and chamfer the edges with a file or large step bit.

Overall length of the aluminum body should be 3.58".

Insert 4 weights and rubber disks.

The disk goes in first before each weight.

As always, you can swap out steel for tungsten to increase the weight.

Lightly sand down the stem of the bumper so it goes in easier.

    Hammer in the bumper.

    Verify overall length approximately 3.98".

    Cross drill and pin.

The total weight with all steel is around 3.8 oz or A5H0 or CARH1.

If you go with this system can you still use any stock? Like MagPul variety?

...the A5 tube has seven locking positions and is designed to work with a MilSpec diameter, lengthened collapsable stock,...
Are the CTR, CTS, Bravo B5, etc ok? I'm just not clear how the stock plays in this scenario.

Any stock. You just lose the fully collapsed position that you'd get with the shorter Carbean RE.

I took my little old N1 Colt stock and put it to full extension on an A5 RE.

    I looks so silly.

Some of the newer Magpul stocks like the STR and ACS will fully collapse and lock in on the A5 RE...

    Bang-on.

My STR's collapse on an A5 RE just like the CTR does on a carbean RE. I love 'em.
