I find the scope is better than the red dot in many ways. Greater field of view for starters. I only use the red dot when I have to transition from shooting a far target to a close target. Given the choice I prefer to shoot the scope on 1x vs the red dot on a close target array. But then again I am using good glass.

But with a small sacrifice (having to tilt the weapon at close range all the time instead of only during quick transitions from far to close), wouldn't it be beneficial to add top end magnification so you don't have overlapping capabilities?

This stage above showed me a weakness to my off set red dot compared to the scope on 1x. I ran this stage with both but had misses with the red dot because I lost which target I was on because the field of view is so small in the red dot and the scope blocked a large section of my field of view in my left eye. I have since gone to this off set red dot mount which gives me a greater field of view.

But still I find that the view and clarity through the scope is better than the red dots so given the choice I use the scope. Now on my precision AR with a high powered scope I use the red dot for close in shots of less than 100 yards. I have found the red dot is better on your initial first shot speed because of its unlimited eye relief I can generally get the first shot off slightly faster. You need to work with both to see what works best for you. I have the luxury of being allowed to shoot 2 divisions at club matches so a lot of times I will run a hoser stage with my red dot and then with the scope on 1x. After doing that a lot I came to the conclusion I have now.

I'm late to the party I know, and I'm just a random guy nothing high speed nor low drag here, but yes, my current HD long gun is an AR with a Trijicon Accupoint TR24G.

Though I will likely bump my other rifle with an Aimpoint PRO to that role after I get some more rounds through it.
