Single focal plane is one of the biggest advantages of an unmagnified optic, but it's kind of a big one when not shooting at stationary target frames.

I have really been hesitant to buy a RDS because I'm afraid I may have to resign to a scope and just shoot with one eye ( because of my eye dominance ). I was actually hoping a RDS was going to be a world of difference( and maybe I'll learn to shoot lefty ). Reading these replies seems like I may be in for bad surprise.

It is no fun for me to shoot with irons but I did want to conquer them to some degree before I moved on. I would like to read some papers on irons shooting.
I'm some form of cross dom, I shoot rifle/pistol strong side but sight pistol with left eye.

I ran irons-only on my SCAR for two classes. More of me just wanting to get familiar with the system when I first bought it (when it first came out in black).

As others have stated, low light and random position shooting is pretty much a killer for irons, but its always good to see what you can do with them just in case.

Optics are definitely the way to go, especially if you go low/no light.

I used to switch back and forth between using my optic and my irons when training on my service rifle just to keep myself gtg on both. I was more accurate at longer distances with my irons (obviously) than my optic. The downfalls of irons were like already said low light/no light and it seemed to take longer to aquire a good sight picture up close (nothing dramatic). Awkward positions were harder but do-able. For mout/cqb useless unless you are using the front sight post method. There wasn't a huge difference to me but the field of view and lighting conditions are what make irons inferior to a red dot in varying demographics. (They do make irons that offer much better FOV than standard plus tritium as well but still don't compare. Troy and Diamondhead are the ones I know of)

As far as who runs irons, I do but only because I am saving for a T-1.

What are you talking about? There's some pretty good experience and discussion being shared.

Awesome = tons of great information to make informed decisions.

Sac up = need to get an optic since shooting with irons will present a greater issue to me than I originally thought.

Tons of great intel in this thread.

It's good to use irons. Like previously mentioned, its good to know what you can do with them. Aimpoints and EOTechs can go down. I chuckle when most people think batteries. Batteries don't rally matter in a situation like this:

That aside I like using irons from time to time. Makes it hard on me, yes. But why do you think runners cross train in sand?

Basically, use your irons. They are there for a reason.

Valid point, but that bullet could have easily hit the fixed front sight post, right? Or the rear folding sight... etc, etc, etc...

Not like those are bullet proof...
