If you are going to have it on your gun, you should know how to use it.
While I certainly don't believe that one needs to learn irons first, they do need to be learned.
There are times that an RDS will out-perform irons, and those circumstances are generally those that are experienced during an actual gunfight. That being said, the guy with irons that has spent 50,000 rounds in purposeful/relevant practice/training will out-perform the guy that has an RDS with 500 rounds of practice.
Only on my handguns.

FrankW... John was using your rifle and hitting the small steel popper out to 275 yds with ease. I was impressed since I suck donkey balls. The 4 MOA dot on my T-1 was obscuring the poppers and I think the irons would have been easier.
I have some kind of red dot or variation of on the rifles but they all have iron backups.
