Second question for those who have one, will a low pro gas block (BCM speciically) and a battlecomp fit through the hole of the NSR barrel nut? I ask because I have to have the compensator permanently attached to the barrel and the gas block pinned. Going to send it out and I'm curious if I need to slide the barrel nut on first before have those are attached.

Yes over the battlecomp (fits over my surefire socom mount iirc) but not even close over the gas block. I can't imagine how any barrel nut would.

Not to be a jerk, but this is exactly why pinning isn't the best idea in the world.

I try to minimize the possible failure points on any rifle I buy or build...pinning the gas block IMHO is an important step in that direction.

I had absolutely no issue unpinning my VLTOR low pro, unscrewing the set screws, then reassembling after sliding the barrel nut on.

Pinning the comp? It's a 14.5" barrel, it has to be perm pinned.
And the gas block has two set screws. You mean to suggest it's best to not secure the gas block in any way..? It's not perm attached. But it's not like you can take the gas block off once the comp is perm pinned anyway.

EDIT: I'm not going to pay the $200 tax stamp and register it as an SBR for a 14.5" barrel. If I were to do that I'd actually get a short barrel.

I presume that he's talking about pinning the gas block, not the muzzle device. The most secure method of gas block installation is generally considered to be pinning it to the barrel in addition to sets screws in dimples. It's true though, that many consider set screws alone to be "good enough".

Don't get me wrong, I'll buy more if I need more, but I would recommend anyone installing one to get a giessele reaction rod and be prepared to put up to 80lbs a few different time on it. I've done forged and billet uppers from good names, so I don't think it's been an upper issue for me, it just seems to be how they are. But still, I think it's overall the best rail out there.
The first upper I did took 80 ft-lbs and some cursing (several attempts, and I thought neither side was going to work). The second upper I did was magically perfect right at the click of 40 ft-lbs. Both were on MUR uppers.

Yeah, the Vltor gas block on my current barrel is only using two set screws and heat thread locker.

Barrel nuts (any) don't fit over gas blocks. The barrel nut needs to be installed before the muzzle device is pinned. With the NSR the barrel nut needs to be torqued to the upper first, because you won't know what side will time correctly.

Yeah...good luck with that. It will probably be "good enough".

with two dimples drilled into the barrel it's worked without issue for about 2k rounds to date.
not saying pinning on top of that isn't worth it.
