Taking a red dot to 400 yards: easy as pie!

I created a video (my first) to illustrate my findings with a red dot. Many people tell me (or told me) that they are inherently inaccurate. What kind of accuracy are we talking about? Punching paper? That's not why I own the types of rifles I do

I had a far easier time making hits with the RDS than the A2 sights out to 400 yards on a man sized target. Night and day difference. Eye strain was lessened, ease of acquiring the target, and the obscuring the target with the dot was a non-issue.

Anyone know how to embed a video!?

    Thanks for watching!

Neat vapor trial. It is all in what you are use to. The red dot is king, but I can shoot tighter groups with irons. Anyway I can't hardly see the target at 400 yards anymore. It sucks to get old. David

That video was awesome. The trace was very good for those distances.

I've also heard people state that red dot sights are inaccurate, or made for people who "can't shoot". I'm not sure if this stems from their experience with crappy $40 RDS, or just myth and inexperience in general. The 300 yard plate at my local range is boringly easy to hit with my aimpoint. Usually when I say that I make consistent hits at 300 yards, they say "wow that is really far"....

Was it mentioned anywhere in the video how much of a hold over was needed to make those hits?

With a 200 yard zero the drop with 77 gr will be about 23 inches from a 16" barrel. Which would be putting the entire dot just above the head of an IPSC.

With a 50 yard zero it will be a little less drop, but the same hold will generally work.

Really, there is a bit of variability in longer range (400 isn't quite "long range") performance, not just with different zeroing methods and ammo, but with a degree of error in the actual zero as well as environmental factors. Wind also becomes a factor that needs to be accounted for.

Really, one needs to get out and determine how their equipment performs at actual range, and log that data for future comparison.

I had no issue hitting targets out to 300 with a red dot on my M4. They are quite accurate if you know how to use one and have a good zero.

    Those vapor trails look cool.

As far as hold over, it depends on what you zero for.

I have an 8" steel plate set at 200yds and can ding it all day long with my H1. I wish I had a place to try to reach out further but thanks for the inspiration!

My holds were illustrated by a faint red circle that appears momentarily during the first two strings. 300 yards the dot covers the "face" of my steel, and at 400 yards the dot floats on top of the targets "head".

I was using 55 grain ammo.

on a stationary bright yellow silhouette target it may be "easy as pie!"...
