    Safety / Selector Wobble

On one of my AR's using an older lower from 2004, the safety wobbles a bit under 1/16" in either direction. This is becoming a bit annoying, because if there is anything I need total confidence in, it is my safety/selector. However, I have no reason to think it would not work as intended, as it still holds firm in safe/fire positions, it just wobbles within those positions.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with safety levers that have begun to wobble and if they pose a hazard or if the safety lever is a replaced item after so much use.

In addition to this, I've been using a selector detent spring that has had the coils stretched to create the proper tension, as my MIAD grip seems to have a deeper "pocket" than any of my other grips. Has anyone had any issues with this?

I haven't expereinced the phenomenon you describe, but it definately sounds as if the spring is too short or there isn't enough tension that they safety may not be as stiff as otherwise. Have you tried a new spring and detent? Or tried to contact Magpul about the specs for the pocket?

Try a new spring and detent, if that doesn't work try another safety.

Do what Robb said also have you compared the hole in the MIAD grip to others? Stretching a spring is never the best fix and could cause problems. Its possible your original grip was off and the MIAD is fine.

The MIAD grip and unmodified selector spring does not put the proper tension to the selector, it actually "floats" from safe to fire.

Does anyone know the proper spec depth of the hole in the pistol grip? I'd measure mine but the batteries in my caliper died. I guess that's why they make dial calipers.... Can you measure and compare your MIAD and factory grip? Have you tried talking to Magpul?

Anyway, again a Colt spring and detent are $6.50 from Brownell's. Swap em and give that a try. Brownell's doesn't have a Colt safety selector, they do have a DPMS unit for another $6 or so, or Grant or someone may have an LMT or something for you.

The MIAD pit seems a bit more shallow than the A2's by about 1mm. This extra shallowness really makes the selector just float in between safe and fire with little tension between them. I've swapped detents, so I know its not that. And the safety still wobbled when I tried a reg. spring and A2 grip. I think I'm looking at a new selector and spring/detent set. If someone else can measure their MIAD and A2, then maybe I can see if it would be worth calling Magpul for a replacement . (I don't wanna waste their time if this isn't an improper grip)

And I still wanna pick up their enhanced trigger guard, the gap is getting annoying.

I just ran into this with the MIAD tonight, as a matter of fact. My LMT lower came with an Ergo grip and when I switched to the MIAD the safety went from crisp to wiggly.

I got around it by trimming down a small piece of stick eraser refill (yay for being an artist!) and placing this piece down in the hole on the MIAD. As a matter of fact, I was thinking "Maybe I should post about this on M4Carbine" when I figured out the problem.

I had the opposite issue with a Battle-Grip on an LMT. Way too tight. Drilled out hole. Better now. MIAD was just peachy, despite my fears.

Stretching springs is bad . Buy a new spring.

Reduce the depth of the selector spring hole. I recall someone using a plastic "q-tip" tube for an expedient fix when he broke his swapping grips at the range.

Thanks, I'll see about doing that.

For what it's worth, my wobble has been narrowed down to the actual selector. It still locks into each position positively, and that's what I'm after, so I'll see how it goes from there.

ETA: Just put in the plastic q-tip plug, as well as an unstretched spring, feels just like the selector on my other AR. Once again, M4C has solved another problem!
