One Aimpoint M4/Larue QD for two uppers?

Hi guys, I was wondering if I could get away with purchasing just one Aimpoint Comp M4 w/ LaRue Tactical QD Mount for two carbines? One carbine would be my primary, the second my backup. Both carbines would be using ALL the same parts based on a Larue 16" M4 Upper with Stag Lower (PRK OLL). I'd swap over the Aimpoint if/when my primary carbine failed me during a training class.

Would swapping the Aimpoint to my backup require re-zeroing?

Should I suck it up and buy another Comp M4 or possibly a T1?

You would have to re-zero between swaps.

I have swapped Aimpoints in LaRue mounts onto other weapons and found that the POI was close enough that I couldn't see a shift, but thats no surprise. However I would not count on this being the case. If money is tight and you're just doing this for a spare, you ought not have a problem. I would check it to see where it shoots on the second weapon before I went to school, and when switching I would try and confirm the zero.

I bet you end up with two Aimpoints anyway.

Unless you scuba dive with your Aimpoint and plan on using night vision goggles, I would suggest two CompC3's. That would be nearly the same cost as the price of of one M4. Then you get the 3x magnifier on a flip mount and move THAT between carbines...

Thanks guys. I did end up going with two Aimpoints based off this thread. I had bought a CompM4 w/Larue Tall QD mount. I just now ordered the T1 with Larue Mount... I figure the extra money will let me not only have a backup, but decide which way I want to go in the future too.

Good choices.

When I've swapped optics to different guns, there were no surprises. Minimal differences at short ranges, more dramatic at longer. Through trial and error, I found a combination of variables that didn't require a zero change, only an ammo change on one gun.

I thought of doing the same thing but this conversation makes me realize I was even further off base.
My idea was to save money (I'm not workign right now) by being able to switch my Aimpoint 900SC from my SBR to my M1 Carbine...



The problem being *DOH! Lightbulb!* (must be a slow-working and dim lightbulb, like a CFC) each of those guns has very different ballistics and point of aim...re-sighting would be manditory and remove the ease-of-use/hot-swapping feature.
So there goes that idea.

IMHO, this would work if either: (a) Both rifles had the same exact zero; or (b) Each rifle had their own zeroed BUIS. This way you can check and adjust the sight's zero onto the iron sights when swapping.

(B) Exists - they both have good iron-sight zeros and the M1 Carbine is surprisingly accurate -- but (C), just thinking of a world of difference in drop and other dope with .30 Carbine ~vs.~ .223/5.56 it gives me a headache.

I'll get another one - or leave the National Postal Meter alone and maybe return the handguard to as-issued style.
