My suggestion is to buy one as reasonable as you can when you can afford it

A collectible historically significant 1911 - no brainer
This. Steyr if you're buying for a collectors piece to shoot ocassionally this is IT. Buying a 1911 for social situations is a different matter and I'll defer to be man above for recommendations.

I'm trying to reconcile Larry's endorsement with what can only be described as a dismal performance test result. He calls it, "one of the best current offerings on the market today." Perhaps he knows about more favorable testing results that were not released to the public?

Tim Lau of 10-8 apparently was given an example of the actual military version (supposedly there is some difference). He seems to indicate that it has been reliable and passed the extraction test.

I think the m45 is a lot of hype and "butthemiliartyusesitsoitmustbethebest". The M45 does not offer anything aside from the dual recoil spring set-up and a beefed up frame. Oh and an atrocious cerakote tan.

For the money I'll take a Les Baer.

    Are we getting different guns?

Sorry in advance to drift off topic. I own 1 personal SIG Sauer P226 ( 9mm) and it has performed as predicted with the expected maintenance and repair at the corresponding round count. It is a 2003 P226...
The currently available 226, and most of Sig's commercial line up, are now manufactured in Exeter NH. There have been wide spread reports that since Sig started to make the guns in Exeter, the quality of the builds have dropped.

I don't remember exactly when the switch took place, but it was post '04.

How have people been getting these? Calling up Colt Custom Shop and placing an order?

I don't know. Not enough details have been released about the test, especially about the rest of the competing manufacturers. Would any 1911 have passed that test. Alot of unknowns.

I was very familar with this development and you have to remember a few things a) because of some DOD restraints they were not allowed to develop a "new" pistol so they had to work with the 1911 base and b) the leaked test results were from developmental testing. You want things to break in development so they don't break in issue use.

Pretty much everyone knows that a 1911 was not the ideal choice but it was the only choice because some other services "modular pistol" programs basically shut down a "new" pistol program for the Marines.

The choices were a) keep rebuilding 1911A1 frames dating back as far at the 1920s, b) issue M9s, or c) refine the 1911 platform into a more modern rendering.

I've had one for several months and it impressed me as an out-of-the-box factory pistol. It's not a Springfield Professional but it is really well done considering it is a standard production"assembled" (not fitted) gun with interchangable parts. It would not be my first choice as a duty gun but it would be my first choice as an out-of-the-box 1911.

    Perspective is everything.
One of the few "objective" post on the M45A1. Very few people have insight on the selection process of gear within the DOD.

This thread has definitely brought out the "we hate the 1911" but offer zero objectivity crowd.

In time- perhaps the HK45C that NSW is now fielding will become standard within SOCOM/JSOC. As a mass issued .45 it is a no brainer.

Rana, not to hi-jack the thread, but why did NSW go with the .45acp round instead of sticking with the 9mil?
I treat my lawnmower better than I treat my 1911.
