I have been a fan of a stubby for years. A couple of years ago I tried out an AFG and didn't like it on a rifle but it has now migrated to my auto shotgun and I like it on there. One thing that I did prefer about it was the hand stop at the front that I use to wrap my index finger around the front.

This year I purchased my first MOE hand guard and it also has a place at the front to wrap your index finger on. It makes a nice reference point when transitioning and helps to pull the rifle into the shoulder. After playing with the MOE a lot lately I have come to prefer this over a stubby. There are other reasons as well such as having difficulty getting a good stable rest (think car hood) while supporting the rifle on the handguard w a VFG mounted.

On my other build which has an NSR the hand stop has been placed-like the MOE/AFG-so I can wrap my index finger around the front. This was done for the above reason as well as to lighten it. Lord knows there is enough crap on the gun already.

Another Magpul product (I sound like a door to door salesman for them) that got me thinking differently was the MOE Scout light mount. It has a ramp directly behind and below the tail cap (push button cap) that indexes your thumb perfectly to activate the button. I have this on my LW build and love it. To momentarily activate the button all I do is turn my thumb towards the sky at the second joint.

Wanting to replicate this on the NSR I placed another NSR hand stop behind the tail cap and it works great. My thumbs rides on the top of the handstop while shooting. To activate the light just slightly move my thumb up and the light is activated. I just did this a couple of days ago but like it so far.

Okay, let's see some more examples and reasons for, besides Jaxman7's. I'm in process of trying to find one that I like. Have several versions of VFG and different lights / mounts, but think the handstop might be better in some cases.

I gathered all the handstops up and did an ARFsystem!

Gotta say that brightened my day a bit. That was a fun little comedic volley between you two (mm & MS).
    Thanks boys!

Recently switched from a Tango Down stubby to a Magpul handstop and love it! I use it to pull the rifle into my shoulder.
