    International travel with ITAR optics?

This may be better off in the General Discussion forum, but I don't think I have enough posts to post there...

I am going to Germany this summer and would like to bring along some optics, including an Aimpoint Micro T1 and an EOTech EXPS 3-0.

I know there are ITAR restrictions on these items, but what exactly does that mean to a traveler that plans on returning with the optics? Do I need to file any paperwork before I travel? Claim anything at customs? I googled the hell out of this, but couldn’t really find anything beyond sales export restrictions and some academic papers for TMP (Temporary Exports/Re-exports) that are specifically for educational use that are unlikely to include firearm sights/accessories.

Has anyone done this that can chime in?

Is there any effort afoot to repeal ITAR? It's reITARded.

It may be retarded to you but it has been a very effective tool against the Chinese and the Iranians, seeking to misappropriate U.S. technology.

Considering that the Chinese just recently hacked F-35 development, I'd say ITAR isn't doing that much to help you.

What ITAR does, it rises the price of US made kit. US military grade NVD's are sold in South-East Asia, rifle parts everywhere, etc... etc... But their price is high, service & spares availability sketchy, among other things. People end up choosing locally made variants instead of the US made product causing you to loose revenue.

Tech, believe me, is already available (especially to governments interested). Problem is that the supply for the ordinary Joe isn't. You loose money. You win nothing.

    IMHO.
