took my first course, i need advice.

I am in need of some advice. I recently took my very first training course which was a handgun level 1 course and I would like some feedback on my take of the course. I have been thinking about what I was taught and I am trying to decide if I should take another course from this instructor. looking at other stuff on the net it seems as if his methods are somewhat dated, i can recall during the class him having small talk with another student and his reply being that he is basically teaching the class as outlined by someone else.

We were not taught shooting while on the move, I am not sure if that is taught in a course like this, but we were taught if you are not shooting you should be moving. There was also a night shoot where we were taught to shoot with handheld flashlights using two different methods. We were taught the harries method and a version of the neck index. Some other things we were taught was a fighting stance(weaver), thumbs up shooting grip, position sul, high ready, one handed shooting with strong side leg leaning out with strong side arm, tap rack, malfunction clearing, and other things i am forgetting. What do you think? Am i just falling for the high speed low drag stuff i see on the net? I came in expecting the course to be somewhat different, although I did not know what to expect.

I am not saying i feel it was not worth it, I feel i got my moneys worth. I chose this course because the price was right and it was only 2 hours away, which was very convenient for me. I was thinking about taking my next course from a more well known company such as Tactical Response, Suarez, etc. Throughout the entire course the instructor was complementing my shooting since i was doing good on the drills. He asked how many courses I had taken, as did the second instructor, and asked if i compete. When I told them this was my very first course and that I was not ex military they replied that some people just pick things up really quick and to not compete and continue with my training. I honestly went in there trying to do the best I possibly can with a very very aggressive attitude, I gave all I had during those drills, I still remember how much effort I put in and how much fun I had. I was somewhat dumbfounded about this because I never thought that I was very good at shooting, but with a slow steady trigger squeeze I was getting very good groups and hardly missed any steel shots. Every thing was done at about 7 yards and to be honest it seemed very easy to me. Once I got my technique down, I was having trouble with reloads and not moving off the x, it was simple. I was also doing better than all the other students in the course and when I asked him which course of his I should take next he said to not take handgun level 2 and go to rifle. His reply was if I shoot this good with with a handgun then a rifle would be second nature.

At the end of the course he opened up to questions and someone asked about John Farnams Urban Rifle course. His reply was to seek out different trainers and to not pass up training with the greats(Farnam, Clint Smith, Ayoob) just to train with him.

Where should I go from here? I am confused. Should i just practice what I was taught? Thats what I originally planned to do, but now I am not sure where to go from here.

See those guys under "Ask a SME"?
Get a class from one of them.

In my opinion, a level 1 class should focus on teaching the student more about the shooting aspect, from a lot more than the 7 yard line and closer. Worrying about "exploding off the x" is irrelevant to the goal of a basic class.

Honestly, when I first read your post I thought you were trolling.

Level 1 classes can vary greatly depending the instructors ideas/thought process. Most times, a level 1 class does NOT involve moving and shooting. When they do, this usually means that the instructor has a basic class prior to their level 1.

The majority (if not all) of the instructors you mentioned I would pass on. Understand the difference between an instructor teaching you the fundamentals (correctly) and man camp (where you blow through thousands of rounds and where B zone (IPSC) or -1 (IDPA) hits are considered "good."

I cleaned it up, I am used to using a board with auto correct.

I have looked at them but just about all of the courses are at least three states away and that is a deal breaker for me at the moment assuming I drive there. There is one that i see that i could make but it is an advanced course and i do not have the prerequisite which is offered three states away.

Your state is kind of a dead zone for training (much like Ohio).

I normally drive to NC or VA for the bulk of my classes (8-10hrs away) so......
