In life things change and evolve. I know of LEO snipers who have had to take suspects into custody themselves when things went wrong and the suspects literally ran up to their blinds not knowing they were there. Situations evolve things and plans don't go like you want. Plus even at close range say 50 yards there are times you need magnification to see something a bit better. The ability to quickly change back and forth is an asset even if its not needed all the time.
