My favorite option so far is a 2.5-8x TS30A2 with an offset RMR.
I'll probably replace the scope with the new Nightforce 2.5-10x42 when it is released.
The versatility is amazing. The ONLY reason I can see to only have one optic is to make a classification in a competition setting.
I don't know how durable leupold hunting scopes are, but they have a 2-7x that looks interesting. I always thought it would be good on a 308, but don't know how forgiving the eye box is on2x. Just something u might want to look into.
That said, I wouldn't be care a out more than 4x for 300 yds but that's just me.
I think the only way I would choose the ACOG + offset is if I already had the ACOG. that's a lot of beans for two optics that could be put into a suitable 1-4/6 that would weigh about the same and be less cumbersome.
there are plenty of good scopes that would do the job as good as or better than the combo for the same or less money. I had a SWFA 1-4 but recently changed that for their 1-6. both of these are very capable and robust scopes with excellent glass. there are others and IMO, the choice comes down to reticle and illumination choices...

never push a wrench...
I wouldn't say a 1-4 is the best option for 300 and in. It really depends on the type of shooting you are doing. If you are wanting to test accuracy, shoot groups then you are going to quickly want more magnification.
None of the 1-whatever scopes are as friendly as RDS on 1x.
This is where higher magnification scopes with RDS come into their own. A 2.5-10 or the like with a offset gives you TONS more versatility. A lot of hub-bub is made over being able to range targets with a 1-4, but even with a 1-6, ranging isn't all that easy.
Canting the rifle is MUCH quicker than turning a magnification ring.

The ACOG is dead.
OK, so what variable would you recommend? I can't even believe this is so difficult to figure out, I figured ACOG w/ offset aimpoint micro would be the simplest option.
I'm open to pretty much anything until we get to well over the 2k range, then we're just getting stupid. So at this point I would include a Leupold Mark 6 or VCOG (I'm patient) on my list of options, although I wouldn't mind staying around 1k if I can get away with it and still get a quality optic that will serve my purposes.
