I am really not the person to ask. The only 1-4 that i have much time behind is the trijicon TR24, which is a nice optic. Very limited time behind a nightforce & like tr24 better. 3 gunners used to like the meopta k dot before the 1-6 scopes took over. You can find a used meopta k dot for around 750. I have no experience with the k dot.
You will get 1000 opinions... all different. You wanted an acog and offset rds, so get that. Nothing wrong with it if it fits your criteria.

FUNDAMENTALS: A crutch for the talentless
The 1-6x VX-6 is lighter and has a better magnification range than most 1-4x scopes, only weights 14oz, has aimpoint bright illumination, auto off, motion on, and costs 800-900 depending on model. That's a whole lot of value for your money. TR-24 is still a badass scope in its own right, illumination will never go out on it.
I'd take a hard look at the 1-8x USO SR-8 or 1-6x Leupold Mark 6 if you had more money to blow. That's the bleeding edge of technology. The Vortex 1-6x reticle is largely worthless, scope is too heavy, weighs more than the SR-8, superb glass though, superb illumination, the scope eyepiece doesn't obstruct your view either, if they could put it on a diet and get a more usable ranging reticle in there, then that would be one of the best offerings on the market.
BDC can be highly unreliable beyond 300-400 yards.
I like all ACOG's. They're good technology, rugged like nightforce compact scopes, but they're both kind of getting long in the tooth for carbine applications. Nightforce doesn't even make their best carbine scope for regular folks anymore.

Before I decide on a vx6, I want to know what users think of eye box and tube effect. What would you compare it to in these areas?
Fwiw, I was thinking of getting a vx-r until this thread. Is the durability comparable? This is going to be an hd gun if I ever need it, and also used for competitions.
The eyebox & 1x distortion are the big turn offs for me. I'm thinking about picking up a SCAR 16s if I do I think I'll go Accupoint, seems many like this as a safe pick for 1-4 and 300/250 and in shooting.
With my 17s, I'm more confused than ever and while I don't want to spend stupid money on it, I'm a big believer in buy once cry once so at this point I think I'm thinking Mark-6, Khales K16i, CQBSS & Z6i...
I'd go Mark 6, but my only worry is battery life & eyebox compared to the others... CQBSS seems like a dream optic but a little heavier than I'd like and probably more magnification than I need for a SCAR 17s (probably better suited on a DMR I think)... Perhaps someone wouldn't mind discussing positives and negatives of these choices...
