Its honestly that big of an deal to put on or get off...

I simply used a torque wrench and one of these I had laying around...

took me exactly .021 seconds to get the socket on the wrench, hand thread my 51 tooth blackout flash hider, and then torque it on the barrel..

    they only cost $8.99 fyi....

I know they're not the same. I was speaking to cementing ability, or how hard they glue things down to start with.

Solid metal rarely behaves this way, so being able to hold it in your hand what are you seeing? Surely it isn't hollow, correct?

It's my understanding that AAC used to make their flash hiders this way. The threads were further inside the mount, with the wrench flats further down and slipped over the barrel somewhat. In essence creating a hollow, thin, WEAK point where the most stress would be applied when attaching and removing the mount. They have since changed the design so the threads are actually under the wrench flats creating a solid, thicker, STRONGER contact point for the wrench.

On a side note, is that a crush washer behind that mount? If so, that's definitely not factory installed. Even shims aren't necessary for that type of mount as no indexing is required. Hmmmmmmm.

Looks more like a LW barrel that flares out at the end.
Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

You're right! I was on my iPhone earlier and couldn't see it all that well.

Yes, you are absolutely right. The section that the flats are on is a hollow ring that floats above the barrel, while the threads are recessed. There is no crush washer, and this is a brand new in box MPW complete rifle.

Here's a side-by-side comparison with a brake that has a stronger contact point for the wrench.

The one I installed a few weeks ago just called for the use of a 22mm (IIRC) wrench, no mention of a special tool.

When you send the old FH back to AAC, they will probably just send you a new one that you can sell!

Chalk it up to S_it happens!

^+1 I'd bet, as I didn't see it mentioned, that if you contact them directly they'll sort you out. I've not seen anything bad about AAC on this site or others.
