    Milled vs. Stamped receivers

Now in a crisis (financial even) I will use whatever. But having used some of the absolute shittiest AK's made by slave labor in pakistan or a nice milled Russian example, the receivers made all the difference. I've shot maadi's as well and they didnt suck but if you ever get a chance to shoot a czech made AK do it.

If it is going to be mine I would much rather build one. Not unlike AR's you can build a quality gun that meets and exceeds your expectations for less money.

I know lancaster makes AK milled receivers but I can not attest to the quality
In regard to the Czech AK, do you mean a VZ58?

As for building instead of buying, I can't recommend that unless the OP really wants to take on the necessary challenges that are required to do it properly. The tools aren't cheap, and if you end up going with a third party builder you will spend as much if not more than buying a commercially produced rifle. I LOVE building my own. It's my hobby, my escape. I wouldn't trade it for anything. But that said, it's not for everybody.

I too am a fan of milled receivers, and I have several Lancaster units. They're good receivers after some work, but their CS has been extremely frustrating for some customers in the past. At this time, I'd look at CNC Warrior for milled receivers, or perhaps Firing Line in Oklahoma. The CNCW units are pretty good, but all of the milled receivers I've gotten have needed some level of work before being right. That's just par for the course, though. Part of the process.

Unless the OP has a keen interest and extra financial resources I'd still go with Steyr's suggestion and purchase an SGL or other Arsenal variant. Just my opinion, nothing more.

    Good luck,
    P.

    OK,

I thought about this and I knew the really nice AK the ANA had were made in eastern europe. I thought they said it was czech. Maybe croatian? bulgarian? I knew the russian ones because of the cyrillic lettering but it was different it had roman lettering and was not stamped.

but it was one of the nicest AK's I had seen (regardless of the colored electrical tape) It had no slop at all in any of it and shot smooth as glass. I wanted to steal it really bad.

Sorry for talking out of my ass, I honestly thought it was czech and it was not a VZ 58 i know that.

That aside I also kind of take the ability to smith and having access to a press for granted some times.

but I still think that paying extra for a milled receiver is worth it

IIRC, the ANA AK's were new Bulgarian contract guns.

My buddy has one and he seems to like it just fine. I've shot it a couple times and it doesn't seem to be any better than my WASR10. Even a cheap AK is reliable in my opinion.

    Thanks for the replies.

I opted for a BCM 16" BFH LW upper and a NSR-13.5 handguard instead.

I'll get back into the AK market when things even out a bit more.

In 1998, I purchased an MISR-90. Parts breakage issues, jamming, and over heating. In 2001, I traded it for an excellent SKS which I still have. In 2007, I acquired a WASR-10. Totally reliable, no overheating, and no parts breakage issues, too.

The modifications I made to it: TAPCO Galil-style hand-guard, K-VAR heat shield, and an adjustable ghost ring ladder sight. Therefore, I donot recommend the MISR-90. Maadi, how good is that?

Yes. The kits they are bringing in have cut barrels.

Just put together a Maadi. Well, mostly a Maadi.... I wasn't too happy with the fit of the selector and top cover so I swapped those out, and a few other parts. Some other non-standard parts on this one as well. The machining quality of the Egyptian parts was only ok in my opinion. East German parts have the best machining quality that I've seen thus far, but these were only so-so in comparison. Rifle should be a good shooter though.
