Cant use an Aimpoint.. What now?

I finally got my hands on an Aimpoint optic. ( none to be found in my area). And apparently my astigmatism is so bad that it renders the optic completely usless. I have read threads where people have mentioned a slight distortion but in my case it goes well beyond that.

The dot looks like a 4 MOA scattering of red. Zero uniformity. Within a very short range it could work. But it would be totally useless for even moderate precision shots. The thing is my eye sight isnt really that bad and I only wear glasses while driving at night. I do intend to get eye sugery at some point. But until then Im torn on what to do. I even looked at a red dot EOTech. Didnt even know they existed. This one had no 65MOA circle, just a red dot. Same result.

I was really wanting an Aimpoint. But may have to use something else until then. Any suggestions? Has anyone experienced that bad of a distortion?

You may want to look through some different aim points. There very well could be a problem with the one you're looking through.

First, make sure that you are focusing down-range, not on the dot.

    Easy checks:

While looking through the optic, rotate it. If the dot appears to rotate with the optic, it may be indicative of an optic issue; if the dot stays the same shape/orientation, it is your eyes.

Optionally, flip up your rear BUIS and check how the dot looks through it.

x2 on looking through another Aimpoint. I'm near sighted with an 'off the charts' astigmatism an my Aimpoint works fine for me. When I say off the charts, I mean I have maxed out the dials on the device the eye doctors puts in front of you to correct your vision (...is A or B better...). I know things can vary from person to person, but that has been my experience. I'm using a Comp C3 model with a 2moa dot, plus I'm a right handed shooter who is left eye dominant.

EDIT: I wear contact lenses when I shoot.

I've got a bunch of survival guides on my Kindle, so I'm ready for an EMP.

Thank you for the replies. I thought it may be the optic also. But the EOTech red dot looked the same way. Obviously wearing contacts would more than likely correct this. But Id like to have a set up thats ready to go at a moments notice without having to grab glasses or contacts. I may have to just break down and get Lasik.

I could live with some minor distortion but it was way beyond that. Ill try to look again and try focusing on the target more. I have read threads where people had an issue but was curious if anyone has had that severe of a distortion. May just have to get a EOTech or a Tijicon in the mean time.

Unfortunately, corrective lens come to most everyone at some point; even those that have eye surgery. There's a discussion going on right now at 1911.com.. Good luck.. Ron

I started with an Aimpoint M4S, but my astigmatism made it something of a pain. I've never used an Eotech, but just looking through them they're way worse. I could use the Aimpoint, but I ended up selling and and replacing it with an Accupoint with a red triangle. It's not a perfect solution, and I still get the astigmatism artifacts around the red triangle, but since it has a nice definite shape I can easily distinguish between the actual reticle and the artifacts. The magnification is nice to have as well, but the tradeoff is that the Accupoint is bigger and heavier than an Aimpoint.

They are a bit more expensive, but several guys I know with similar issues use the mini-ACOGs (in 1.5 power). They have several different reticles in red, green, and amber, I believe, including dot/circle - dot.

I had one briefly, but while I do have an astigmatism, I am not as bad as the OP, so I sold it and went with a T1. For me, the decision was primarily cost driven. The magnification was low enough that (for me) it did not negatively affect two-eye open shooting, and the eye relief was pretty generous.
