Blown primers with Surefire Socom 556

Specs: BCM upper standard 16 carbine cut down to 14 1/2. Surefire muzzle break pinned. low pro gas block pinned also,
Lower is BCM with SSA trigger, H buffer. standard spring, BCM BCG, BCM charging handle

    Suppressor: Surefire Socom 556

Rifle has around 1,500 rounds on barrel before it was cut to 14 1/2. Never had a problem with rifle shooting M855 ,M193, and Black Hills 77grn. Picked up rifle today after barrel was cut and break was pinned and visited suppressor at dealer, chronographed and sighted in cut barrel with 77grn unsuppressed then suppressed no problems. Shot about 30 rounds. Then switched to Independence 55grn 5.56 and shot about 60 rounds suppressed when I had a malfunction. Had a primer stuck above chambered round which wouldn't let the bolt go into battery. Pulled the BCG out and pried the round out of the chamber and checked things over. No damage. Let suppressor cool off then started to fire same ammo again. About round 15 same thing. Blown primer. It was about 95 degrees out and I wouldn't say I was firing fast but the rifle was somewhat hot. I'm thinking the ammo is the problem as this is the cheapest ammo I've come across. $8.99 a box. I've searched the threads and I'm kind of thinking over presser but I've never had any problems with this rifle before, I did fire about 15 rounds with suppressor off after the second malfunction and rifle ran fine. Should I switch to maybe an H2 buffer? Rifle locks back on empty mag now both suppressed and unsuppressed. Thoughts?

That Independence shit is SO FRIGGIN HOT. I won't shoot it. Bought a box, shot 5 rounds, and pulled down the other 15 to use the components to make SANE ammo.

Ammo. Swap to something else, check that for signs of overpressure (look it up).

Cutting down to 14.5" and not opening the port up will help from being overgassed when suppressed. But I bet at some point you end up with an H2 or H3 anyhow.

A 14.5" cabine length gas system is suppose to have an H2 buffer when silenced.

Colt M4A1s come with an H2 buffer from the factory because they are intended for SOCOM units and will be fired suppressed.

You need to be using USGI ammo, not that foreign shit.

14.5" and 16" Carbine barrels have the same port size.

Roger thanks guys. Iv read that MK18's come with H buffers so I thought maybe I'd be ok but now I know I need an H2. I thought both 16 and 14 1/2 had the same gas port size so thanks for the clarification. I went back out and shot 30 rnds of mk262 unsuppressed no problems. I'll spend some coin on better ammo when shooting supressed.

My point on port size is no matter what, you aren't going the wrong way towards MORE gas by cutting it down and should need to mess with the port in that direction. But yea, go with a heavier buffer and better ammo.

Although funny you mentioned mk262 as that's pretty hot too!

The root cause is likely the ammo, but I'm going to be the dirty whore who shamelessly plugs the Vltor A5 recoil system as a potential upgrade.

My current MK18 upper runs with an H3 buffer. I tried the A5 with it but decided to go back to the original carbine RE and H3. The A5 went on my SPR.

I have not had any problems running that combo. Of course, I have not shot my upper suppressed yet either. The ammo that I've run has been:

    BH MK262 MOD1
    BH 223 75 gr. OTM
    BH 223 52 gr. Match
    LC M193
    LC M855
    PPU M193
    PPU M855
    IMI M193
    IMI M855

I currently have a box of 20 rounds of the independence 5.56 that I haven't tried yet. Now I'm curious if I should even run it.

According to Ken Elmore, if a gun runs reliably without a suppressor, then it will be overgassed with one mounted. If it runs fine with a suppressor, then it will be undergassed and short stroke without. Kind of makes sense.
