Need Advice on a 7.5" Pistol with 10" rail

So I have an un-barreled upper with a freefloat 10inch rail. I wanted to build a lightweight 7.5inch Pistol but read the other thread where a member blew up his rail. Ideally I'd like to get the KX3 pig brake as many use, but it is quite pricey and hard to come by.

I found a cheaper alternative for a Pig brake here:
    http://www.ar15depot.com/upperparts.htm

the PIG16 about halfway down for $55. I'm wondering if anyone has used this and how long is this muzzle device. I would like the barrel + Pig length to at least pass the 10-inch rail so I do not have any issues. Otherwise I would have to buy a carbine rail (more $$) and reuse the 10" rail for another build.

    Thanks in advance.

No idea about the fake Pig but the real one weighs just shy of 1/2 pound. There goes your lightweight pistol plan. I would get a 7" rail and conventional muzzle device. Maybe just a short bird cage to save weight, length and protect the threads. GH

Take a look at the Troy Claymore. It's similar to the pig, but is a lot smaller and lighter.

Its not long enough for what he needs. He needs something at very least 3 inches long, preferably 3.25in long. Putting a claymore on a 7.5 barrel with a 10 rail imo is dangerous as hell. One wrong stretch of a finger or your hand and you will end up losing a hand or a finger. Sure you can say just use a hand stop but that still isnt a truly safe bet.

IMO why bother with a 7.5 barrel. You will neuter the f outa the 5.56 round in performance. Just get a 10.3 or 10.5 barrel, run a normal flash hider, and it will end up being not only lighter, but still somewhat decent in the velocity and accuracy department. IMO no point in running a 7.5 barrel without a 7in handguard as the only purpose of that short of a barrel is purely for size.
From TOS ... "buy the shit out of that thing, all the mil spec is just nonsense."

    Its for exactly that, compactness.

I understand the reduced velocity out of shorter barrels, esp 7.5inches. This is entirely a plinking/fun gun only for distances under 50yards. In any case, I might just go ahead and buy a 7-inch rail to make things easier.

    Thanks for the advice though.

This is why I like the samson rails etc, or having a matching rail brand. Say its winter time and very cold you, throw on a Noveske pig, run it like hell with a 10 rail, then in summer/spring remove it, slide on shorter rail, and run it small as possible.

Main thing I mention the safety aspect is its really easy to end up reaching over a 10 rail if your not careful and have no hand stop. No leeway in error. See a lot on tos that are flush and IMO just not worth the risk. It's all preference tho. GL with your build, should be a fun little bugger.

why not a 9" rail (MI SS gen 2)?

Because I already have the 10" rail.

I will most likely end up buying a 10.5" barrel so I won't have any issues using the rail. I'm currently just missing the barrel at this point, deciding whether I should really build an AR pistol or just go with another Carbine.

If I go with the 10.5" barrel, this will most likely turn into an SBR by next year when I get a chance (funds are limited right now) to apply for the Tax stamp.

Anyway, here is the progress. The lower is partially stripped as I'm looking to buy a nice aftermarket trigger. I already have a PSA BCG and BCM CH Mod3.

(don't mind the VFG/AFG on the 15-22, it was just there for the pic. I put both on there to see which one to go with. Its only running the VFG now. Also the scope is on there for show, it obviously wont go on the AR pistol. But if I go with a Carbine it will stay.)

If you plan to put make that lower a 10.5 pistol for now you might want to remove that picture and the stock if it isnt a SBR lower. Its been built as a rifle already not as a pistol.

If you noticed, there is no barrel and the lower is not complete. How can it already be built as a rifle without actually having a barrel???

The lower has never been attached to a complete upper, and the RE/Stock can be exchanged for a Pistol tube.
