Go with the 10.5" bbl and your rail... I have a 7.5" 223 pistol and if I had it to do over I'd have gone a few inches longer. I like the compactness, but it does pack quite a bark.. and some flames too..

I've learned to like it, but it took a bit.. lol

I added a linear comp and that helped a lot, but it's not 3" long, only about 2".

Yes, i'll probably be going with a 10.5" at this point. its a bit more expensive, but the payoff is worth it and I'm still getting some useful velocity for that length, and also carbine gas.

I don't mind the muzzle blast of short guns. I have a Draco AK and a Mosin M44 so I'm quite used to the recoil and flames

You can remove the stock and keep the buffer tube like it is and be good to go no?

AFAIK, yes you can remove the stock no problem. as long as the lower has never been installed with a complete upper, you are free to do as you wish with the lower. The upper that I have in the picture is obviously incomplete.

Many will use paracord to wrap the std M4 stock tube to make it a bit more obvious that it cannot 'easily' be converted to an SBR by simply sliding on a stock, which many of us also have as a spare part in our inventory of parts for AR's.

I did this to one of my pistol builds (the 300blk) that used a std M4 tube.

And yes, to build a pistol from a lower it must not have ever been installed on a long barreled upper receiver. You cannot convert a rifle to a pistol, but you can do it the other way around if you want (pistol can be converted to a legal 'non nfa' rifle (unless you get a stamp for the nfa variant))

Exile Machine also produces rubber carbine buffer tube covers that work nicely as well. Paracord is one route, this is another.
