They could actually use their SR-25 carbine RE, a regular rifle spring, and a custom length buffer (without the inner spring). This shouldn't infringe on Vltor's patent. On the E-carrier, the rifle/A5 system fixes the major issue with it, initial carrier over speed. It speeds up quick and runs out of gas fast. The rifle type buffer system slows down and delays the carrier and the constant rate spring combined with the increased reciprocating mass insures that the system cycles fully. Both the A5 and E-carrier combined delay and slow the bolt carrier with a wide range of consistency over the carbine system. This delayed system makes extraction that much easier, add that to a long gas system is even easier extraction.
Just so I'm clear, it's this specific reference?

There's a lot more going on in the functioning of the rifle than most people realize. The balance of broad operation and reliability without undo stress and recoil is what I was referring to. To have the widest operational level without the negatives that can come up. It takes some time to see what works and why, at least for what is available now.

So I just got a second sr15 upper that I'm having trimmed to 14.5". Would you guys recommend using the a5 system on it? And if so what weight buffer? I've been looking into the a5 tubes and spring kits but I don't see options to choose a weight. Do regular buffers work? Definetly will be suppressed someday and there's no talking me out of having it cut down, it's happening.

Just because I'm curious, are you SBRing it?

Ugh, we really need an A5 / 308 buffer system guide tutorial sticky with pictures. These same questions are relentless. I think I've explained it 50 times myself alone.

No i am not. I'm fully aware of the ins and outs of pinning. I've dealt with it before and feel it's no big deal for me.

There's no down side using the A5 system with that barrel length just depends whether you want to drop the $. If using suppressor it's probably worth it. If no suppressor, less beneficial.

I use the A5 on one of my factory KAC 14.5. But no experience with a factory KAC 16" cut down. Also, in the last couple of pages in this thread there is a thread referenced wherein Jack didn't recommend cutting and confirmed that factory KAC 14.5 has a different gas port. So you may want to consider porting if cutting. That said, it seems a lot of people have done it without messing with the port size but I have no firsthand experience. I only have KAC 14.5 uppers as I prefer them to anything else.

Either way, you really can't go wrong with the A5 but I wouldn't say you need it with an sr-16. More of a luxury.

I only brought up the a5 in here because it directly relates to the topic. Kind of. I looked into doing this awhile back and I remember being told that the ports are the same. That kind of sucks. I assume it would be bigger on a factory 14.5"?it seems ayan at boltcarrier.com does this work. Looks like I'll have him do the work.
